An 18-year-old woman has been arrested after police allegedly discovered a pair of pliers and scissors hidden inside a plate of food being delivered to three suspects at Ruai Police Station.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said officers intercepted the items during a visit that was supposedly intended to deliver a meal to the suspects, who were being held over a series of alleged attacks targeting young women in Nairobi.
According to the DCI, the woman arrived at the police station claiming she wanted to deliver food to three friends in custody.
However, officers allegedly found the tools concealed in the plate, prompting her immediate arrest and triggering further investigations into the alleged escape plan.
“A prison visit meant to deliver a meal instead blew a plot wide open,” the DCI said, adding that officers had uncovered what it described as an attempt to provide the suspects with tools that could facilitate their escape.
The three suspects were arrested on September 9 following investigations into alleged robberies and sexual assaults targeting young women in the city.
Investigators allege that the suspects operated an anonymous TikTok account through which they contacted unsuspecting women and arranged meetings.
The women were allegedly lured to secluded or abandoned locations, where the encounters reportedly turned into incidents of sexual violence and robbery.
According to preliminary investigations, some victims were allegedly forced to transfer money to accounts controlled by the suspects, while others were reportedly robbed of mobile phones and other valuables.
The alleged discovery at Ruai Police Station has now prompted the DCI to issue a warning to members of the public over attempts to assist suspects in escaping lawful custody.
The agency said aiding or attempting to aid an escape from lawful custody is a serious criminal offence and warned that anyone found facilitating such an attempt would face legal action.
The DCI urged members of the public to avoid actions that could interfere with investigations or help suspects evade justice.
The investigation into the alleged jailbreak attempt is continuing, with authorities seeking to establish whether other individuals were involved.
