DRAMATIC COURTROOM SHOCK: Top Lawyer Dragged to Dock Over Massive £360k Fake Gold Scam
A HIGH-FLYING advocate has appeared in court after being dramatically ambushed by police at a courthouse—facing explosive allegations of a massive multi-million shilling gold scam.
Alphonce Collins Odoyo Osewe was dragged before the dock at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, following a sensational arrest after he had reportedly evaded authorities for nearly a year.
The Nairobi-based lawyer stood solemnly before Chief Magistrate Gethi Kibiru as severe criminal charges were read out, revealing a alleged web of deceit involving fake gold transactions totaling tens of millions of shillings.
‘Intent to Defraud’
According to damning court documents, Advocate Osewe is accused of orchestrating a brazen scheme alongside co-conspirator Patroba Odhiambo Tobias, alias Ishmael.
The prosecution alleges that between May 1 and May 9, 2023, within Nairobi County, the pair tricked victim Bernard Shiaundu Aete into handing over a staggering Ksh35.7 million (USD 260,400) under the false promise of supplying 400 kilograms of pure gold bars.
“On diverse dates between May 1, 2023 and May 9, 2023 at Nairobi County jointly with Patroba Odhiambo, you acquired USD 260,400 equivalent to Ksh35,737,296 from Bernard Shiaunda Aete whilst at the time of the acquisition, you knew or had reason to believe that the same formed part of or was proceed of crime to wit money obtained by false pretenses,” the official charge sheet read.
In a second bombshell charge, state prosecutors detailed how the accused allegedly targeted another victim, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, swindling an additional Ksh26.1 million between May 2023 and May 2026 after pretending he was in a position to deliver another 400-kilogram haul of gold bars.
Alongside charges of obtaining money by false pretenses, Osewe faces severe counts of money laundering under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
Dramatic Ambush
The court heard extraordinary details of how Osewe’s freedom came to a sudden halt on Tuesday, August 4, when detectives pounced on him inside the very building where he practices law.
State prosecutors revealed the advocate was ambushed at the Milimani Law Courts right after appearing during the high-profile arraignment of Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament, John Kaguchia.
“The accused has remained at large for nearly a year,” the prosecution told the court, emphasizing the length of time he had successfully eluded law enforcement.
Dressed in court attire, Advocate Osewe pleaded not guilty to every charge brought against him, prompting the court to enter a formal plea of not guilty.
Fighting for his temporary freedom, defence lawyers launched an urgent bid for lenient bail and bond conditions.
“Our client is not a flight risk,” Osewe’s legal team pleaded before Magistrate Kibiru. “He has a fixed abode, is a respected officer of this court, and will abide by all directions.”
The court is expected to rule on his bail application as the state pushes to ensure he faces the full force of the law.
