During the conversation, Ojwang asked his friend about the experience of being arrested, admitting it was his first time. His friend attempted to reassure him, acknowledging challenges but insisting he would be fine, even mentioning that Industrial Area (where Ojwang was held) was one of Nairobi’s worst police stations. Ojwang’s final question—“Will I be safe here?”—was met with the response, “Remand is safe.” The recording has raised concerns about his treatment in custody prior to his death.
Gachagua’s Bombshell
ormer Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has demanded the immediate suspension of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat following the death of social media personality Albert Ojwang in custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi, on June 8, 2025.
In a June 9 statement on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Gachagua alleged that Lagat personally ordered Ojwang’s arrest on June 7. He further accused Lagat of exercising unauthorized control over Kamukunji and Central Police Stations in Nairobi without the knowledge or oversight of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
Who Wanted Him Arrested & Why
The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, stated that the arrest of the late Albert Ojwang was based on a complaint filed by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, who alleged defamation. Kanja explained that the arrest was part of an investigation to protect Lagat’s reputation, as he is entitled to legal protection against defamation. The remarks were made at the Central Police Station on Monday, June 9.
Police Interdicted
The National Police Service (NPS) has interdicted the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Nairobi’s Central Police Station and all officers who were on duty during the night of the death of Albert Ojwang, a social media personality who died in police custody.
The announcement was made through a statement issued by NPS Corporate Communications Director Muchiri Nyaga on behalf of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja in the early hours of 9 June 2025. The interdiction is to facilitate an independent investigation into the incident which has raised public concern and scrutiny.
The NPS said the officers interdicted are the OCS, the duty officer on shift that night, the cell sentry, all report office officers present at the time and any other officer who may have had direct or indirect involvement in the events leading to the death of the detainee. The NPS added that the officers will face additional disciplinary or legal action depending on the findings of the ongoing investigations.
