CCTV Captures Explosive Babu Owino–Robert Alai Gun Drama Altercation

Fresh details have emerged surrounding a high-profile altercation involving Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai, after CCTV footage surfaced capturing the moments leading up to the confrontation at a popular restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are currently analysing the footage as part of ongoing investigations into the incident, which reportedly took place on January 3, 2026, and sparked widespread public debate.

According to the CCTV timeline, the incident began at around 4:01pm, when Babu Owino is seen standing up from a gazebo within the restaurant and walking towards a second gazebo where Robert Alai was seated with a group of approximately six men.

Initial interactions between the two politicians appeared calm, with footage showing handshakes and seemingly cordial exchanges between Babu Owino and members of Alai’s group.

However, two minutes and 32 seconds later, the situation rapidly deteriorates. CCTV footage shows the Kileleshwa MCA rising from his seat and allegedly pushing Babu Owino, triggering a physical confrontation as the Embakasi East lawmaker attempts to defend himself.

Moments later, the situation escalates further when Alai is captured drawing what appears to be a firearm and cocking it, causing panic among restaurant patrons, who are seen fleeing the area in apparent fear.

At approximately 4:09pm, a female customer is seen approaching the two leaders in an apparent attempt to calm the situation. However, footage under review allegedly shows Alai turning against the woman, with claims that he struck her during the confrontation.

The footage further shows another patron rushing in to intervene and assist the woman as tensions continue to spiral.

The altercation reportedly spills into a third gazebo, where Alai is allegedly seen throwing an object in Babu Owino’s direction. Shortly afterwards, the Embakasi East MP is seen leaving the restaurant calmly through Gate One, bringing the confrontation to an end.

Despite the dramatic footage, Robert Alai has strongly denied any wrongdoing, dismissing claims that he brandished a firearm during the incident.

“There was no instance where we drew guns at each other, as alleged, or where I drew a gun at him. I do not think that is a fair analysis of the situation,” Alai said.

Meanwhile, Babu Owino has called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, urging authorities to take appropriate action in line with the law.

The incident has reignited public concern over the conduct of political leaders in public spaces, with pressure mounting on investigators to establish the facts behind the disturbing footage.
