Five Arrested in Bungoma for Impersonating Lawyers, LSK Cracks Down on Fake Law Firms
Five individuals were arrested in Bungoma County on Wednesday, June 4, for allegedly posing as lawyers and operating fraudulent law firms. The arrests followed a crackdown by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), prompted by public complaints about con artists exploiting clients.
The suspects are accused of running four fake law firms, handling legal documents, and even appearing in court virtually. The LSK has vowed to intensify efforts to eliminate such impersonators and protect public trust in the legal profession.
The LSK’s enforcement team, led by council member Steve Mbugua, conducted raids on the suspects’ offices in Bungoma town, recovering forged documents, including title deeds and court case files. Mbugua revealed that the fake firms had operated for years, deceiving unsuspecting clients. Some office secretaries were also implicated for modifying stamps and illegally collecting fees without their employers’ knowledge.
Mbugua expressed concern over the rising cases of legal fraud, particularly in rural areas. “These masqueraders not only tarnish the profession but also exploit vulnerable clients,” he stated. Under Section IV of the LSK Act, the society is mandated to regulate the legal field and prosecute impostors. Those convicted face up to three years in prison or fines.
To curb fraud, the LSK urged the public to verify lawyers’ credentials via its official website, which displays practitioners’ photos, license validity, and office details. Mbugua warned that the LSK would monitor suspects released on bail to prevent them from reopening illegal practices.
The suspects are detained at Bungoma Police Station pending arraignment. The LSK’s crackdown highlights its commitment to upholding legal integrity and safeguarding citizens from exploitation. Authorities advise vigilance when engaging legal services and stress the importance of cross-checking advocates’ registration status to avoid falling victim to scams.
