Former Shinyalu MP Daniel Khamasi Dies Aged 79 After Prolonged Illness
Former Shinyalu Member of Parliament Daniel Khamasi has died after a prolonged illness, it has been confirmed.
The veteran politician passed away on Tuesday morning while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital. He was 79 years old.
Khamasi served as the Member of Parliament for Shinyalu Constituency for two consecutive terms between 1997 and 2007, a period during which he established himself as a prominent figure in Kakamega County politics. His death marks the end of a long public service career that spanned both parliamentary leadership and community advocacy.
News of his passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders and residents across the region, many of whom have praised his dedication to public service and his contribution to the development of Shinyalu.
Among those who paid tribute was Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa, who described the former legislator as a committed leader whose legacy would be remembered by generations.
“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hon. Daniel Khamasi, former MP for Shinyalu,” Governor Barasa said in a statement. “He was a dedicated servant whose contribution to Shinyalu will be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Shinyalu.”
During his decade in Parliament, Khamasi was known for advocating for grassroots development, education initiatives, and improved infrastructure within his constituency. Those who worked closely with him have described him as a calm but firm leader who prioritised the needs of his constituents.
Political analysts say Khamasi played a key role in shaping Shinyalu’s political landscape at a time when multiparty democracy was still taking firm root in Kenya. His tenure coincided with a period of significant political transition in the country, including constitutional debates and economic reforms.
Family members have not yet issued an official statement, but sources close to the family confirmed that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
Khamasi’s death adds to a growing list of veteran politicians who have passed away in recent years, prompting renewed reflection on the contributions of Kenya’s early multiparty-era leaders.
As tributes continue to pour in, leaders and residents alike have expressed solidarity with his family, describing his passing as a major loss not only to Shinyalu but to the wider Kakamega region.
