Gachagua Breaks Silence on Wamatangi Property Demolition
Kenya’s former Deputy President aspirant and Democratic Coalition Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of politically motivated persecution following the demolition of business premises linked to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.
In a strongly worded statement, Gachagua described the Tuesday night demolition, conducted under heavy police presence, as an attempt to intimidate political opponents in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“The mountain has already made a decision to send you home and those traitors who came to see you to plan how to persecute their kinsmen,” Gachagua said, condemning what he described as state-sanctioned targeting of Governor Wamatangi and his allies.
According to Gachagua, the demolition followed a high-level political meeting held at Sagana State Lodge on Monday, January 12, 2026.
He claimed political leaders from Kiambu County discussed the growing influence of the DCP and Wamatangi’s popularity, with pressure reportedly mounted to take action against the governor, including enforcement measures targeting businesses linked to him. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Gachagua alleged that the overnight operation led to the destruction of business structures and damage to vehicles belonging to customers. He further warned that attempts to disrupt DCP political activities—ranging from public meetings to local mobilisation—could backfire.
“Using state power to settle political scores will only be counterproductive,” Gachagua said. “The mountain people don’t eat their own vomit once they have vomited. As you continue persecuting the community and unleashing violence on them, that only hardens their resolve to get rid of you on the ballot on 10th August 2027.”
The DCP leader called for calm among Kenyans, urging respect for constitutional freedoms and the rule of law. He also expressed solidarity with Governor Wamatangi, encouraging him to remain focused on service delivery.
“For Governor Kimani Wamatangi, my brother, take heart, remain focused and continue serving the people of Kiambu County. I stand with you every step of the way and appeal to the people of Kiambu to pray for you and stand with you in the face of intimidation and persecution. The darkest hour is just before dawn,” Gachagua said.
By the time of publication, State House, the National Police Service, and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had not issued a public response to the allegations.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over due process, political competition, and the role of enforcement agencies in Kenya’s increasingly charged political landscape. Analysts warn that such confrontations risk deepening tensions in the Mt Kenya region as politicians begin positioning for the 2027 election.
