Government Unveils Plan for Subsidised 6kg LPG Gas Cylinders With Track-and-Trace
The government has announced plans to roll out locally manufactured 6kg LPG cylinders with track-and-trace technology.
In a public notice, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum through the State Department for Petroleum has invited qualified companies and consortia to submit Expressions of Interest (EoI) for the production of the subsidised cylinders.
According to the ministry, the project is part of a broader plan to increase access to clean cooking energy for households across the country. To reduce costs, the government will fund 40% of the production including seed gas and accessories. LPG marketers will fund 40% and consumers will pay 20% as a refundable deposit.
The cylinders will be manufactured in Kenya and will meet Kenya Standards. EPRA will ensure that tracking devices are fitted in each cylinder to ensure accountability and safety.
“The cylinders to be distributed under this programme shall be fitted with track and trace technology under the direction of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA),” the ministry stated in the notice.
Interested bidders must prove they have the technical expertise, experience and resources to undertake the project. Terms of reference and eligibility criteria are available on the State Department for Petroleum’s website.
Submissions should be delivered by 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 to the Ministry’s offices at KASNEB Towers II in Nairobi. Four hard copies (one original and three duplicates) and a soft copy in PDF format should be submitted in sealed envelopes clearly marked with the tender reference number.
Late submissions will not be accepted and bids will be opened immediately after the deadline in the presence of bidders or their representatives.
