IG Kanja Appoints Johana Kiplangat as New GSU Commandant in Leadership Changes

IG Kanja Unveils Major Police Leadership Shake-Up as Johana Kiplangat Takes Over Powerful GSU Unit

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has announced significant changes within the senior ranks of the National Police Service, appointing Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Johana Kiplangat Tonui as the new Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) in a move aimed at strengthening leadership within the country’s elite security formations.

The changes, contained in an internal notice approved by the National Police Service Board and seen on June 10, took effect immediately and affect key positions within the Kenya Police Service.

AIG Tonui, a recipient of the prestigious Head of State Commendation (HSC), has been transferred from the Directorate of Operations to take charge of the General Service Unit, one of Kenya’s most specialised and strategically important security units.

The GSU plays a critical role in national security, handling high-risk operations, counter-terrorism missions, riot control, and the protection of key government installations and strategic assets across the country.

Tonui replaces AIG Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa, who has been redeployed within the unit as Deputy Commandant. Nyongesa, who holds the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) honour, will continue serving in the GSU leadership structure, a move viewed as ensuring operational continuity and institutional stability.

Under his new role, Nyongesa will assist in overseeing logistics, personnel management, welfare programmes, training, and operational planning for the paramilitary unit.

The leadership changes also saw AIG Paul Maingo Mumo appointed Director of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), the department responsible for investigating complaints against police officers and enforcing professional standards within the service.

Mumo, a holder of the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) honour, previously served in the Directorate of Quality Assurance. His appointment places him at the centre of efforts to enhance accountability, transparency, and discipline within the National Police Service.

As Director of Internal Affairs, Mumo will oversee investigations into allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, corruption, and other disciplinary matters involving police officers.

The latest appointments come at a time when Kenya’s security sector is undergoing broader leadership restructuring.

Just days earlier, President William Ruto approved a series of changes within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), reshaping the military’s top command.

Among the changes, Major General John Maiso Nkoimo was appointed Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army, replacing Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who retired after years of service. Prior to his appointment, Nkoimo served as General Officer Commanding Central Command.

Brigadier William Kamoiro was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed General Officer Commanding Central Command, while Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah was named Deputy Air Force Commander.

In further promotions, Brigadier Peter Kipketer Limo and Brigadier Dr Francis Njoroge Kuria were elevated to the rank of Major General and appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Forces and Director of Medical Services respectively.

The latest police and military appointments signal a broader effort by the government to strengthen leadership structures within Kenya’s security agencies amid evolving security challenges and growing demands for accountability and operational effectiveness.
