IPOA Launches Major Recruitment Drive with 33 Vacancies — Strict Rules Set for Chairperson Role Ahead of May 19 Deadline
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has unveiled a sweeping recruitment exercise, advertising 33 job vacancies across its ranks, including the influential position of chairperson, in a move that signals a significant shake-up within the police watchdog.
In notices issued on Tuesday, April 28, the authority outlined stringent eligibility criteria for the top role, setting a high bar for candidates seeking to lead the oversight body tasked with holding law enforcement accountable.

According to IPOA, applicants for the chairperson position must be Kenyan citizens with a university degree and possess qualifications equivalent to those required for appointment as a High Court judge under the Constitution. This includes a minimum of ten years’ experience in the judiciary, legal practice, academia, or a related legal field.
“Candidates must also satisfy the integrity requirements under Chapter Six of the Constitution,” the notice stated, underscoring the emphasis on ethical leadership and accountability in public service.
The authority further detailed strict disqualification criteria, barring individuals who currently hold political office, have recently served in the police service, previously sat on the IPOA Board, or have been convicted of offences involving dishonesty.
The successful candidate will serve a single, non-renewable term of six years, with remuneration determined by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
Shortlisted applicants will undergo a rigorous vetting process, including background checks and verification of academic and professional credentials. They will also be required to obtain clearance from key state agencies such as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), and Credit Reference Bureaus (CRB).
Applications for the chairperson role must be clearly marked and submitted physically to the Public Service Commission offices in Nairobi or sent via post, with a strict deadline of May 19 at 5pm.
In a parallel announcement, IPOA also opened applications for 32 additional roles spanning finance, investigations, legal services, complaints management, monitoring, inspections, research, and administrative support.
Among the positions listed are Senior Accountant, Investigations Officer II, Legal Officer II, Monitoring Officer II, Complaints Management Officer II, Clerical Officer II, Call Centre Officer II, Office Assistant II, and Driver II.
Unlike the chairperson role, applications for these positions must be submitted exclusively online through IPOA’s official careers portal by May 18 at 5pm, with the authority warning that no physical submissions will be accepted.
IPOA reiterated that all successful candidates must meet Chapter Six integrity standards and provide clearance documentation from the relevant state bodies.

The authority also cautioned applicants against fraud, emphasizing that no fees are charged at any stage of the recruitment process and that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
