Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia Arrested Over Alleged KCSE Certificate Forgery

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 27, 2025 — Kajiado West Member of Parliament George Sunkuyia was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.

According to a statement from the EACC, the lawmaker is currently undergoing processing ahead of his expected arraignment in court to face charges related to the alleged forgery. The commission has not yet disclosed specific details about the nature or timeline of the forged document.

Sunkuyia, a two-term MP, was first elected to the National Assembly in 2017 and re-elected in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. Prior to his tenure in Parliament, he served as councillor for the former Olkejuado County Council between 2002 and 2013, and later as Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Keekonyokie ward from 2013 to 2017.

His arrest adds to a growing list of public officials under investigation or prosecution for allegedly forging academic credentials. The EACC has intensified its crackdown on such cases in recent years, citing the need to uphold integrity and credibility in public service.

In February 2025, Juja MP George Ndung’u Koimburi was arraigned in a Kiambu court over six charges related to academic forgery. He was accused of falsifying a KCSE certificate and two university documents from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Koimburi denied all charges and was released on a Ksh 200,000 cash bail.

Conversely, in June 2024, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi was acquitted in a high-profile case involving alleged academic forgery after the court ruled that the prosecution failed to substantiate its claims and that investigations were flawed.

The EACC, in a January 2025 update, confirmed that five additional public officials had been arraigned for similar offences involving fake academic documents used to obtain jobs or promotions in government institutions.

Sunkuyia’s case is expected to proceed in court in the coming days, with further details to be released by the EACC and the Director of Public Prosecutions. The development underscores continued efforts by Kenyan authorities to enforce ethical standards in public office.
