Kalonzo Condemns Attack on Sifuna and Orengo at Kisumu Church, Says Kenya’s Political Climate Has Reached ‘Dangerous Levels’
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly condemned the reported attack on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo during a church service in Kisumu, describing the incident as a disturbing sign of the country’s worsening political environment.

Speaking on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Kalonzo said the alleged disruption of opposition leaders at a place of worship was unacceptable, accusing President William Ruto’s administration of presiding over an atmosphere of political intolerance and intimidation.
Addressing supporters, the former Vice President claimed he had received reports indicating that members of the Linda Mwananchi team, including Governor James Orengo and Senator Edwin Sifuna, had been attacked by individuals he described as “goons” while attending a church event in Kisumu.
“Huyu Bwana Ruto ameharibu nchi. Hata tukiwa hapa, tumepata ripoti kwamba kundi la Linda Mwananchi, James Orengo na Bwana Sifuna, wamepigwa na wahuni ndani ya kanisa,” Kalonzo said.
Translated into English, Kalonzo’s remarks mean: “Mr Ruto has ruined this country. Even as we are here, we have received reports that the Linda Mwananchi team, including James Orengo and Mr Sifuna, has been attacked by goons inside a church.”
Kalonzo argued that churches should remain places of peace, unity and worship rather than becoming arenas for political confrontation. He said violence directed at leaders attending religious gatherings undermines democratic freedoms and raises concerns about political tolerance in the country.
His remarks came amid heightened political tensions as the opposition continues with its nationwide Linda Mwananchi campaign, which has drawn large crowds across several counties while also witnessing isolated incidents of confrontation.
The reported attack has sparked fresh debate over the safety of political leaders during public engagements, with opposition figures calling for authorities to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
The government had not immediately responded to Kalonzo’s allegations at the time of publication.
