Linda Mwananchi Leaders Hold Rally in Kisumu Amid Political Tensions

NAIROBI — A faction of the opposition under the banner “Linda Mwananchi” staged a high-profile political show of force in Kisumu on Sunday, April 26, defying earlier warnings from a section of local leaders who had opposed the gathering.

Video footage reviewed by local media showed a convoy of leaders arriving in the lakeside city under heavy security escort before attending a church service and later proceeding to the KaOwuor Grounds, the venue for the planned rally.

The delegation was led by Edwin Sifuna, alongside James Orengo and Babu Owino, among other allied leaders. The trio was received by large crowds of supporters, many waving placards and chanting slogans as they accompanied the leaders through the city.

Organisers described the rally as part of a broader push for “people-centred governance” and increased accountability in national leadership. “We are here to stand with wananchi and to ensure their voices are heard, regardless of intimidation,” one of the leaders said during the procession, according to footage circulating online.

The event unfolded against a backdrop of mounting political tensions in the Nyanza region, where rival factions have in recent weeks exchanged accusations of harassment, disruption of meetings, and attempts to suppress dissenting voices.

Speaking ahead of the rally, Orengo warned against what he termed as efforts to curtail democratic space. “No one has the authority to deny citizens their constitutional right to assemble and express themselves,” he said, in remarks interpreted as a direct response to those who had opposed the Kisumu gathering.

Despite the earlier threats, the rally proceeded without immediate reports of major disruptions, marking a significant moment in the ongoing political contest for influence in one of the country’s traditional opposition strongholds.

Analysts say the turnout signals an intensifying struggle within the region, as competing factions seek to assert dominance ahead of future political realignments.
