Litein Boys Students Ordered to Pay KSh 137,000 Each After Riot Over Arsenal vs Man City Clash
Litein Boys High School in Kericho County has been closed indefinitely after students went on a rampage on Sunday, September 21, after a Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal was banned.
The protest turned into a full blown riot leaving destruction in its wake. Students vandalized dormitories and classrooms after switching off power in the school compound, leaving security and police in the dark.
Millions of shillings worth of property was destroyed and KSh 2 million allegedly stolen from the bursar’s office. Viral videos and images on social media showed thick smoke billowing from dormitories as sections of the school went up in flames.
Authorities also revealed that CCTV footage captured students wielding machetes and knives during the chaos.
Heavy Fines Imposed
The school administration has announced that each student will pay KSh 137,000 to cover the costs of repairs before learning resumes.
This is part of a wider crackdown on indiscipline. Reports indicate that students from Litein Boys will not be accepted in other schools to deter further unrest.
Arrests and Government Intervention
Kericho Governor Eric Mutai confirmed that at least ten students were arrested. He described the incident as “very disturbing” and called for urgent measures to be taken to restore discipline in schools.
He also said he will convene a meeting with Ministry of Education officials to discuss the systemic issues behind the unrest and find a way forward.
For now, hundreds of Litein Boys High School students are in limbo as the school tries to recover from the chaos.
