Man Arrested for Posing as KDF Brigadier, Offering Fake Military Jobs to Youths

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a man accused of impersonating a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) brigadier and defrauding unsuspecting youths with promises of military employment.

In a statement released on Tuesday, November 18, the KDF confirmed that the suspect was apprehended at his Kilimani apartment, where he was reportedly dressed in full Kenya Air Force regalia.

Authorities say the impersonator lured job-seekers by issuing fraudulent recruitment letters purportedly from the KDF Recruit Training School (RTS) in Eldoret.

“Parklands detectives have arrested an impostor who has been parading himself as a Kenya Defence Forces brigadier, preying on the hopes of innocent citizens and extorting money in the guise of recruitment,” the DCI statement read.

Investigators recovered a range of incriminating materials during the raid, including documents bearing the Ministry of Defence logo, six fake admission letters bearing identical serial numbers, seven fingerprint forms, and a Yilmaz Defence Industry ammunition manufacturing manual.

“The suspect, who had upgraded himself from civilian to ‘KDF brigadier’ without ever seeing a parade square, has been on a money-minting spree, conning hopeful youths with fake recruitment letters to the Recruit Training School in Eldoret,” the statement added.

The DCI warned the public against shortcuts in military recruitment, stressing that genuine enlistment into the security sector is “free, fair and transparent.”

The arrest comes three weeks after the conclusion of the KDF recruitment exercise, which ran from Monday, October 13, to Saturday, October 25. During the exercise, the military invited qualified Kenyans to apply for positions as General Service Officer (GSO) cadets—regular and graduate—Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and Women, and Defence Forces Constables.

Applicants were required to submit their applications online and provide original and copies of their National ID card, KRA PIN, and academic certificates. Recruitment teams from the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, and Kenya Navy were deployed nationwide to designated centres for the exercise.

The impersonator remains in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court. Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious recruitment activities.
