Matiang’i launches Migori political tour with key Jubilee meeting as 2027 race gathers pace
Fred Matiang’i has begun a high-profile political tour of Migori County with a meeting involving Jubilee Party aspirants and local opinion leaders in Kuria West, as the former Interior Cabinet Secretary steps up his grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i arrived in Kehancha on Wednesday, August 5, where he held talks with local leaders as part of efforts to strengthen Jubilee Party structures and expand its presence in the region.
The meeting brought together Jubilee aspirants and opinion leaders, giving Matiang’i an opportunity to hear their views while outlining his political vision for the country.
Taking to social media after the meeting, Matiang’i described the engagement as productive and said he was looking forward to meeting residents during the next phase of his visit.
“This morning, after arriving in Kehancha, Kuria West, I had a productive conversation with opinion leaders and Jubilee Party aspirants. I listened to their perspectives and shared our vision for Kenya’s future. I now look forward to meeting residents as we continue this important conversation,” Matiang’i said.
The Migori visit comes as Jubilee intensifies its grassroots activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with the party seeking to rebuild its national political machinery and reconnect with voters across the country.
Matiang’i’s role has become increasingly prominent within the party since he was appointed deputy party leader and endorsed as Jubilee’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The former Cabinet Secretary has since embarked on a series of engagements across different parts of the country as he seeks to strengthen his support base and popularise his presidential bid.
Jubilee seeks to rebuild political influence
Jubilee, which was formed in 2016 and dominated Kenya’s political landscape during the 2017 election period, is now attempting to rebuild its grassroots structures ahead of another highly competitive presidential contest.
The party has been reorganising its leadership and mobilisation structures, including the appointment of Jeremiah Kioni as deputy party leader in charge of operations and Richard Ole Kenta as secretary general.
The changes have been presented as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s organisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i has subsequently emerged as the central figure in Jubilee’s presidential campaign after party leaders endorsed him as their candidate.
In February, Jubilee Secretary General Richard Ole Kenta said the party had unanimously endorsed Matiang’i, pointing to his record in government and calling for stronger grassroots mobilisation.
Matiang’i steps up 2027 campaign
The former Interior CS has increasingly been taking his political message directly to voters, holding meetings with local leaders, party officials and grassroots supporters.
His latest engagement in Migori is likely to place greater attention on the party’s ambitions in Nyanza and surrounding regions as political parties begin laying the groundwork for the 2027 contest.
Jubilee has also been seeking to strengthen its engagement with opposition forces as Kenya’s political landscape undergoes fresh realignments ahead of the next presidential election.
For Matiang’i, the immediate challenge will be to convert the growing visibility of his national tour into a stronger grassroots political network.
With the 2027 presidential race expected to become increasingly crowded, his Migori tour marks another step in his effort to establish himself as a serious contender to succeed President William Ruto.
The former Interior CS now faces the task of building support beyond his traditional political base while convincing voters that his Jubilee-backed presidential bid can offer a credible alternative in the next election.
