MP Babu Owino Now Learning to Fly Planes After Law Degree

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has taken an unconventional step in his academic and professional journey by enrolling in an aviation course shortly after completing his Law degree.

The development was revealed by Linus Kaikai, group editorial director and head of strategy at Royal Media Services, during a celebration on Saturday, November 22, marking Kaikai’s admission to the Bar as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Kaikai praised Owino for his exceptional versatility, describing him as a “remarkable individual” capable of excelling across multiple fields.

“This is a very solid guy. Very solid mind. He has an actuarial science degree, he has Law and Economics degrees, and he is currently learning to fly planes,” Kaikai said. He added that Owino’s dedication ensures success in any area he chooses, whether politics, law, economics, or aviation.

Beyond his personal achievements, Owino has been recognised for his contributions to education. Kaikai highlighted the lawmaker’s support for Kenya School of Law students, as well as his online classes for KCPE and KCSE candidates.

“Babu helped me understand a lot and made commercial law very easy to grasp,” Kaikai noted. Other attendees also commended Owino’s distinctive approach to mentorship.

“Babu was doing his pupilage. As an MP, he would go to campaigns, come back to do his pupillage, make submissions, attend meetings, and still take me through crash courses. He would teach me without a book. He is very smart,” recalled one female participant at the ceremony.

Owino, in turn, expressed gratitude to Kaikai for acknowledging his journey. On social media, he congratulated the journalist on his milestone and reflected on the challenges of joining the legal profession.

“The path to the Bar is not an easy one. It demands long hours, sacrifice, determination, and the courage to stand up for justice. Kaikai has not only walked the path but has done so with humility and purpose. His admission to the legal profession reflects his character, someone who continuously seeks to serve society at a higher level,” Owino wrote.

Owino’s pursuit of aviation is not entirely new. In 2022, he shared a video on Facebook showing himself confidently at the cockpit controls of a plane while returning from a campaign trip along the coast. The clip prompted curiosity and scepticism, with some followers questioning whether he was properly trained to fly.

Owino confirmed that he is a fully trained and certified pilot. He revealed that he has logged over 50 hours of flying time, meeting the requirements for licensing, and emphasised that this was not his first experience piloting an aircraft.
