Nairobi Boda Boda Riders to Wear Reflectors with Registration Numbers
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced new rules for boda boda operators which will require them to wear unique reflector jackets with registration numbers to boost safety and order in the city’s transport sector.
Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum at the Kenya School of Government on October 2, Sakaja said all boda boda riders in Nairobi must be registered under specific Saccos. Each Sacco will have a unique colour which will be displayed on the riders’ reflector jackets alongside their registration numbers.
“Transport sector, especially boda boda sector must be regulated. Riders must be in recognized Saccos, wear jackets with registration numbers and strictly follow traffic rules,” Sakaja said.
The county is set to set a deadline for all operators to register under Saccos and the name of each Sacco will also be displayed on the reflectors for easy identification. According to him, the measures will improve accountability, passenger safety and bring sanity to a sector that has been lawless.
“We can’t compromise on safety and order especially as Nairobi is growing. Regulation will not only improve passenger safety but also bring sanity to our transport system,” he added.
Sakaja also spoke of the traffic congestion and urged boda boda riders to obey traffic lights to allow smooth traffic flow. He also outlined proposed reforms in the matatu sector and said no more than two vehicles should operate in bus stage lanes at a time.
“These reforms will ease congestion and ensure mobility across the city is not interrupted,” he said, adding that both boda bodas and matatus must play a role in solving Nairobi’s traffic crisis.
The county will roll out the new rules in phases and enforcement will target both riders and matatu operators.
