Nairobi Matatu Drama: Embassava Driver Bites and Beats Police Officers After Arrest

A matatu driver is in police custody after he brutally attacked two officers in Nairobi and left them hospitalised.

The suspect, Jared Nyanduro, was stopped by traffic officer Jackline Naeku while driving an Embassava Sacco vehicle. Naeku found the matatu did not have a valid road service license and told the driver to go to Embakasi Police Station.

According to police report, Nyanduro refused to comply, telling the officer they would “die inside the vehicle” instead. He then sped off and rammed into another car before smashing flower vases near Rubis Police Station.

Naeku was injured during the commotion. Matters worsened when the driver got out of the vehicle and physically attacked the officer, kicking and punching her. She was injured in the ribs, eye, collarbone and even got a bite wound on her hand.

Members of the public intervened and managed to rescue Naeku before helping in Nyanduro’s arrest.

But the drama didn’t end there. Once at Embakasi Police Station, Nyanduro attacked another officer, Senior Sergeant Samuel Njuguna during a search. He bit Njuguna on the hand before colleagues restrained him.

Both injured officers were rushed to hospital as Nyanduro was placed in custody to be arraigned.

This is the latest in a string of incidents where members of the public have attacked police officers. Just a few months ago, Police Constable Emily Kinya was hospitalised at Kenyatta National Hospital after being assaulted by protesters in Nairobi’s CBD.

Kinya had been separated from her colleagues during the demos and was beaten in the head by an angry mob before a young man stepped in to rescue her. She spent weeks at KNH before being discharged.
