‘No Foul Play’ — DCI Delivers Verdict on Cyrus Jirongo Fatal Crash
Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has formally ruled out foul play in the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, concluding that the veteran politician died as a result of a road traffic accident.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 5, the DCI confirmed that Jirongo was involved in a fatal crash on the night of December 13, 2025, at Karai along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
The announcement comes amid weeks of speculation and public debate surrounding the circumstances of his death, with concerns raised by family members prompting authorities to launch an extensive investigation.
According to the DCI, a multi-agency team comprising homicide detectives and specialists from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau was deployed to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Investigators visited and processed the scene, where they secured and documented key physical exhibits before retrieving CCTV footage from a petrol station located along the highway. The footage, alongside amateur videos recorded at the scene, was subjected to forensic analysis.
Detectives also obtained the manifest of the bus involved in the accident and reviewed it as part of the probe.
In addition, statements were recorded from several key witnesses, including Jirongo’s wife and the first family member who was contacted immediately after the crash. Testimonies were also taken from the driver and conductor of the bus, staff at the petrol station, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
Seven passengers who were travelling in the bus later presented themselves voluntarily to assist investigators, while detectives also recorded a statement from the driver of a separate bus alleged to have been involved in rescue efforts.
“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the DCI said in its statement.
The detectives added that once the remaining investigative processes are concluded, the file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further direction.
However, the DCI cautioned that the driver of the ill-fated bus could still face potential criminal charges, depending on the final findings of the investigation.
Authorities also issued a warning to members of the public against spreading speculative or unsubstantiated claims, saying such statements could prejudice investigations and cause unnecessary public anxiety.
The latest update comes less than three weeks after an autopsy revealed that Jirongo died from severe blunt-force trauma, injuries that pathologists said were consistent with a high-impact collision.
Jirongo, a prominent businessman and former lawmaker, was a well-known political figure whose death sent shockwaves across the country, fuelling intense public scrutiny and demands for answers.
