Fresh photographs of ODM leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga have surfaced online, bringing an end to days of mounting speculation regarding his health and whereabouts.

The image, shared late on Thursday, November 26, shows the 82-year-old veteran politician standing alongside his son, Elijah Bonyo Oburu, and two other individuals during what appears to be a private moment in Dubai. Oburu is seen wearing dark sunglasses, a casual outfit with sports shoes, and holding a walking stick—appearing calm and in good spirits.

The photo has reassured supporters who had grown increasingly anxious due to his prolonged absence from the public eye. His reduced visibility over the past week had triggered a wave of speculation, with some online users questioning whether the senator had taken ill.

Why Questions Arose About Oburu’s Whereabouts

Oburu has in recent months shouldered a heavy public and family burden. He played a central role in steering the Odinga family through the emotionally charged period following the death and burial of his younger brother, Raila Odinga, before taking part in the preparations for the ODM anniversary celebrations in Mombasa shortly afterward.

His sudden retreat from the public sphere, with no recent appearances or statements, fuelled rumours across social media platforms.

In an effort to quell the speculation, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga confirmed earlier this week that her elder brother had travelled to Dubai for a brief period of rest.

“He has been handling a lot, both politically and within the family,” she said. “He simply needed some time to rest and recharge.”

An X account associated with the Siaya senator had also posted a short update, describing the trip as a “sabbatical” meant to help him “recollect, recharge, and reset.”

However, speculation persisted, prompting additional reassurances from close allies.

Allies Confirm Oburu Is ‘Energetic’ and Set to Return

On Wednesday, November 26, long-time Raila Odinga ally Victor Marende said he had personally spoken to the senator by phone, emphasising that Oburu was “upbeat” and in good health.

“He sounded energetic and very much himself,” Marende said. “He told me he is preparing to return home, and we expect him back in the country on Friday, November 28.”

His anticipated return is set to interrupt his brief rest period as he once again assumes a central role in guiding the Odinga family through yet another bereavement—the upcoming burial of his younger sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga.

Oburu’s reappearance and the assurances from those close to him have largely calmed the public discourse, easing concerns that had rapidly circulated online over the past several days.
