Police Repel Armed Bandits in Dramatic Gun Battle, Recover 45 Stolen Cattle in Major Security Operation
Police have repelled an armed attack by suspected bandits and recovered 45 stolen cattle during a major multi-agency security operation in Turkana County, in what authorities say is another significant blow against organised livestock theft networks operating across Kenya’s North Rift region.
The operation, conducted following intelligence gathered by security agencies, targeted Namakat Village in Kalemngorok Sub-Location, Aroo Sub-County, where cattle stolen during a recent stock theft raid in neighbouring Pokot North Sub-County had allegedly been hidden.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), security officers swiftly launched a coordinated operation involving multiple agencies after receiving credible intelligence on the whereabouts of the stolen livestock.
The officers successfully traced and recovered all 45 cattle before the suspected criminals could relocate them, marking a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to curb rampant livestock rustling in the region.
However, the operation quickly escalated into a dangerous confrontation.
As the security team escorted the recovered livestock to safety, they reportedly came under heavy gunfire from suspected bandits who attempted to reclaim the stolen animals.
Police said officers responded tactically, engaging the attackers in a fierce exchange of fire before successfully repelling the assault and forcing the suspects to retreat.
Despite the ambush, the officers managed to secure all the recovered cattle without suffering any reported losses, allowing the operation to conclude successfully.
In a statement, the National Police Service said the recovered livestock has been placed under secure custody pending verification and eventual handover to its rightful owners.
“The recovered cattle have been secured pending identification and return to the legitimate owners. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all suspects involved,” the NPS said.
Authorities have since intensified security patrols across the affected areas as detectives continue pursuing suspects believed to be part of wider criminal networks responsible for livestock theft in Turkana and neighbouring counties.
Police also appealed to members of the public to share any information that could help recover additional stolen animals or lead to the arrest of those behind the raid.
The latest recovery comes as the government ramps up intelligence-led operations targeting banditry and cattle rustling, crimes that continue to devastate pastoralist communities across Turkana, West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu and neighbouring counties.
Livestock theft remains one of the biggest security challenges in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions, often triggering violent clashes, loss of livelihoods and retaliatory attacks between rival communities.
The successful operation also follows another recent recovery in the same region, where security officers recovered 10 stolen cattle after tracking animals stolen from Pokot North to Aroo Sub-County, highlighting the area’s continued role as a hotspot for organised stock theft.
Security agencies say sustained intelligence-driven operations are now focused on dismantling the criminal syndicates behind the raids, restoring stability and protecting thousands of families whose livelihoods depend entirely on livestock.
Police have reaffirmed that operations against bandits will continue until those responsible for organised cattle theft are arrested and prosecuted.
