Rigathi Gachagua Kept Distance From Juja MP After ‘Fake Abduction’ Embarrassment, Party Claims

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua deliberately kept his distance from Juja MP George Koimburi after being publicly embarrassed by what later emerged to be a staged abduction, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has claimed.

In a strongly worded statement issued by DCP Secretary-General Hezron Obaga, the party alleged that Koimburi misled Gachagua in May 2025 by falsely claiming he had been abducted by police officers, only for investigations to later reveal that the incident had been orchestrated to evade arrest over ongoing land fraud cases.

According to the party, the revelation left Gachagua politically exposed after he had publicly defended Koimburi, condemning the alleged abduction before the truth emerged.

“Our party leader defended him publicly, castigating the said abduction, only to later learn it was a classical con game,” the DCP statement said.

DCI Probe Exposed ‘Stage-Managed’ Kidnapping

The claims follow investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which concluded that the Juja legislator had stage-managed his own abduction. The probe led to the arrest of three individuals, including the Juja Constituency Development Fund (CDF) chairperson, who reportedly confessed to participating in the alleged kidnapping plot.

The DCI findings significantly undermined Koimburi’s account and triggered public backlash, raising serious questions about the MP’s credibility and political motives.

DCP now says the incident forced Gachagua to exercise extreme caution in dealing with Koimburi to avoid further political embarrassment.

“That incident alone explains why our party leader became extremely careful around him,” Obaga said.

Koimburi ‘Set Conditions’ to Avoid Prosecution — Party Alleges

The party’s remarks come a day after Koimburi announced he had severed ties with DCP, accusing the party of betrayal.

However, DCP has dismissed the MP’s claims, instead accusing him of attempting to use the party and its leadership to shield himself from prosecution.

According to the statement, Koimburi allegedly demanded to be exempted from appearing at public events with Gachagua until February 2027, a move the party claims was designed to slow down legal proceedings in the criminal cases he is facing.

“He demanded political cover and threatened to defect back to President William Ruto if his conditions were not met,” the party alleged.

‘Never a Member’ — DCP Rejects Defection Claims

In a further twist, DCP insists that Koimburi was never a registered member of the party, despite his recent claims of defection.

The party went as far as accusing the Juja MP of being a mole planted by President William Ruto’s camp within the opposition ranks.

“George Koimburi has never been a member of the Democracy for the Citizens Party. His actions are consistent with those of a political mole sent to destabilise the opposition,” the statement said.

Growing Political Fallout

The row adds another layer of intrigue to the shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election, with opposition parties increasingly wary of internal sabotage and credibility scandals.

For Gachagua, who has positioned himself as a key opposition figure following his fallout with President Ruto, the Koimburi saga underscores the risks of political opportunism — and the damage a single scandal can inflict on carefully managed public messaging.
