Ruto Gives Defeated UDA Candidate Samuel Muchina Key Oversight Role in Ol Kalou After Crushing By-Election Loss
President William Ruto has assigned defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah a prominent role in overseeing the implementation of multi-billion-shilling government development projects in Ol Kalou, just days after the ruling party suffered a heavy defeat in the constituency’s high-profile parliamentary by-election.
The announcement came after Nyagah met President Ruto at State House on Tuesday, July 21, where the Head of State reportedly assured him that all government projects launched in Ol Kalou would proceed uninterrupted despite UDA’s loss at the ballot.
The move is likely to fuel fresh political debate, with critics questioning the decision to entrust oversight of constituency projects to a candidate rejected by voters, while government allies argue the appointment demonstrates the administration’s commitment to delivering development regardless of electoral outcomes.
Speaking after the meeting, Nyagah said President Ruto had directed him to personally monitor the implementation of several flagship projects that are already underway across the constituency.
“I am pleased to inform the residents of Ol Kalou that the President assured me that the following key projects will continue and be completed for the benefit of our people, and I will personally supervise their implementation,” Nyagah stated.
According to Nyagah, the projects include the completion of 36 ongoing rural electrification programmes across the constituency, construction of houses for vulnerable families, drilling and completion of boreholes in every ward, and the continuation of several major infrastructure projects.
He said the government would also proceed with the planned university project, the completion of JM Level 5 Hospital, construction of the constituency stadium, and ongoing road projects initiated during the campaign period.
Nyagah maintained that his new responsibility transcends political competition, insisting his focus would be ensuring the projects benefit residents.
“These projects are not about politics; they are about the future of Ol Kalou. I have accepted the responsibility of closely supervising their progress,” he said.
The announcement follows UDA’s disappointing performance in the July 16 Ol Kalou by-election, where Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru secured a landslide victory with 35,440 votes.
Nyagah finished a distant second after garnering 5,450 votes, delivering one of the ruling party’s most significant electoral setbacks in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Ol Kalou contest attracted national attention after the Kenya Kwanza administration unveiled several development projects during the campaign period, including roads, affordable housing initiatives, a university project and other infrastructure programmes collectively valued at billions of shillings.
Opposition leaders accused the government of using state-funded development projects to influence voters ahead of the election, allegations repeatedly denied by UDA leaders, who argued the projects were part of the government’s broader development agenda.
Political analysts interpreted UDA’s defeat as another warning sign for President Ruto’s support base in the Mt Kenya region, with opposition figures describing the outcome as evidence of shifting political dynamics.
However, the President’s allies have rejected suggestions that the by-election reflected waning support, insisting the government remains focused on fulfilling its development promises irrespective of electoral results.
Nyagah’s new oversight role is now expected to remain under close public scrutiny, particularly as questions emerge over how the implementation of the projects will be coordinated alongside the constituency’s newly elected Member of Parliament.
