Sakaja Faces 20+ Charges as MCAs Unite for Impeachment

Impeachment heat is mounting against Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and his deputy Njoroge Muchiri as MCAs gather support to kick them out.

Speaking on Monday at the County Assembly premises, Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai said more than 20 charges had been compiled and signatures were pouring in fast.

“We have the motion and the charges—over 20 substantive accusations. The threshold was crossed within minutes of collecting signatures. This time it’s not a faction; the whole House is behind this,” Alai said.

The outspoken ODM legislator said Governor Sakaja had no political lifelines to hide behind.

“Before, whenever there was a problem he would run to Raila Odinga. This time it’s between him and us. Raila has no business in this,” he said.

Roysambu MCA Sospeter Wamumbi echoed the frustrations, saying the county executive was neglecting oversight.

“The executive has consistently ignored our resolutions. We allocate budgets and implementation is lacking. That’s why we are saying enough is enough,” Wamumbi said, adding that the discontent is across all wards.

From health to education to infrastructure, MCAs say concerns have been raised and ignored. “This is not about us as leaders; it’s about Nairobi residents whose needs are being ignored,” Wamumbi said.

Alai said the case had been prepared to hold up in both the assembly and the Senate. “We have sealed the loopholes so that once the impeachment passes there will be no way to reverse it,” he said.

MCAs dismissed attempts to drag Raila Odinga into the matter, saying he has no role to play. “If Raila wants to comment he will do so himself. No one should speak on his behalf,” Wamumbi said.

By Sunday evening, Deputy Minority Leader and South B MCA Waithera Chege said over 60 signatures had been collected and the number was expected to surpass the required 84.
