Security Nightmare at Nyayo House: Unidentified Man Breaches Murkomen’s Office During Fumigation
A shocking security breach occurred at one of Kenya’s most guarded government buildings, as CCTV footage captured a man breaking into Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s office at Nyayo House in Nairobi.
Dramatic Intrusion into High-Security Nyayo House Office
An unidentified man successfully infiltrated the 20th-floor office of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, spending nearly five hours inside before exiting undetected. The incident, which has left investigators puzzled, took place during the early hours of Sunday, January 11, following the man’s entry at around 10:45 pm on Saturday, January 10.
Nyayo House ranks among the government’s most sensitive facilities, housing critical departments such as immigration, citizen services, and Nairobi’s regional administration. While CS Murkomen’s primary workspace is at Harambee House, he frequently uses the Nyayo House office, where many senior officers from his ministry are stationed.
How the Breach Happened During Fumigation
Sources close to the probe indicate the intruder likely took advantage of a scheduled fumigation exercise that night, which ran from approximately 9 pm to 5 am. The operation led to relaxed security protocols, with some personnel permitted to leave the premises, creating temporary gaps in surveillance and access controls.
CCTV recordings show the suspect—a tall individual dressed in black jeans and a black cap, face partially concealed—entering the building, using the lifts, and later departing at 3:40 am without drawing attention.
Discovery and Signs of Tampering
The breach went unnoticed until the morning when staff arrived and found the office in disarray. Items had been moved, rearranged, and possibly searched. Investigators noted that two desktop computers appeared to have been accessed or interfered with, prompting speculation about the motive.
A senior police source told investigators: “We cannot rule out the possibility that the intruder was looking for information.”
Spotlight on Security Lapses at Government Buildings
As a key member of the National Security Council—chaired by the President and including top officials like the Deputy President, Defence CS, Foreign Affairs CS, Attorney-General, Chief of Defence Forces, NIS Director-General, and Inspector-General of Police—CS Murkomen receives elite protection at both his residences and offices.
The incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the Administration Police’s Security of Government Buildings (SGB) Unit. The case has been transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), with teams from Nairobi Area and Kilimani Police Stations now leading the inquiry.
In response, Administration Police leadership has ordered a reshuffle of officers assigned to Nyayo House to reinforce security measures and prevent future vulnerabilities.
The suspect’s identity and exact intentions remain unknown, but the breach underscores ongoing concerns about physical security in high-profile government installations. Investigations continue as authorities work to identify the intruder and determine whether sensitive information was compromised.
