Senior NIS Officer Found Dead in Locked Nyamira Residence as Detectives Launch Probe

A senior officer attached to Kenya’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) has been found dead inside his official residence in Nyamira County, prompting an intensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased, identified as 56-year-old David Kipkoech Kosgey, served as the Head of County Intelligence Coordination in Nyamira and was among the most senior intelligence officials stationed in the region.

According to authorities, Kosgey’s body was discovered at around midday on Friday, June 5, after concerns grew over his unexplained absence and failure to report for official duties in Nairobi.

Nyamira County Commissioner Benson Leparimorijo confirmed the incident, revealing that junior officers became alarmed after repeated attempts to reach the intelligence chief proved unsuccessful.

“He was expected to travel to Nairobi on official duty, but when efforts to contact him failed, fellow officers became concerned and decided to check on him at his residence,” Leparimorijo said.

The commissioner further disclosed that the officer’s house was completely locked from the inside, forcing colleagues to break down the door to gain access.

Upon entering the residence, they discovered Kosgey’s lifeless body lying inside the house.

Police officers who responded to the scene reported that there were no obvious physical injuries visible on the body. However, preliminary findings indicated circumstances that investigators considered suspicious.

According to police sources, blood stains were observed near the body and are believed to have resulted from the deceased vomiting blood before his death.

Detectives have also not ruled out the possibility of a struggle occurring before the officer died, although officials stressed that investigations remain at an early stage and no conclusions have been reached.

The residence has since been sealed off and designated a crime scene as forensic experts continue gathering evidence.

Kosgey’s body was transferred to Nyamira Level 5 Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death.

“No arrest has been made at this stage, and investigations are ongoing,” a police source familiar with the case said.

The death of the senior intelligence officer has sparked concern among local leaders and security agencies, with investigators now working to establish the events leading up to his final hours.

Authorities are expected to release further details once the post-mortem examination and forensic analysis are completed.
