Troubled Life of Slain Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu: Debts, Court Battles, and Final Days

New details have emerged on the financial and legal troubles lawyer Kyalo Mbobu was facing before his murder.

Investigations have revealed that the celebrated lawyer was drowning in debt, with multiple lawsuits and a tarnished reputation. Sources point to a trail of unpaid loans, withheld client funds and court judgments.

According to KTN, Mbobu had been blacklisted by local banks and was forced to turn to shylocks and credit companies for financial help. But these loans came with exorbitant terms that ballooned far beyond the initial amounts.

Debts Out of Control

In one case in 2019, Mbobu borrowed Ksh10 million from a shylock but defaulted soon after. Despite paying Ksh24 million over two years, the debt had grown to Ksh72 million by the time he died.

It didn’t stop there. In another instance, a Somali shylock who had lent him Ksh17 million for a ranch project demanded full repayment of Ksh52 million, further deepening Mbobu’s financial mess.

Withheld Client Funds and Court Cases

Mbobu’s troubles escalated in 2023 when he was taken to court by a religious organisation that had entrusted him with selling two Karen parcels worth Ksh250 million.

Court documents showed that Mbobu released Ksh153 million from the transaction but withheld Ksh97 million, sparking a bitter legal battle. Justice Francis Gikonyo of the Milimani Court ordered Mbobu to release the withheld funds plus interest and keep only Ksh8.7 million as legal fees.

The troubles continued when in August 2024, another client accused him of withholding Ksh40 million awarded through arbitration which had been deposited into his firm’s account but never released.

Murder Along Magadi Road

Mbobu’s legal and financial woes ended violently on Tuesday, September 9 when gunmen ambushed and shot him along Magadi Road in Nairobi as he was heading home. The post-mortem report released two days later by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor showed he was shot eight times at point blank range. It was a deliberate and calculated attack.

A Career Tarnished by Scandal

Once a sharp lawyer, Mbobu’s later years were marred by scandal, lawsuits and debt. His murder raises questions whether his financial woes and court battles led to his demise.
