CCTV Footage and Phone Data Reveal Crucial Leads in Kyalo Mbobu Murder Case
Police are zeroing in on the people Matthew Kyalo Mbobu met hours before his assassination.
According to reports, the DCI is reconstructing Mbobu’s last movements using CCTV and mobile phone data. One key lead is a meeting at the Sagret Hotel on Milimani Road where Mbobu arrived at 11:05 a.m. He spent three hours with several individuals who are now persons of interest.
The group had lunch worth Sh3,000 before Mbobu left the hotel at 1:45 p.m. and went back to his office at Town House in the CBD. Later that evening, CCTV footage showed his vehicle leaving the office at 5:09 p.m. as he headed to his home in Karen.
Surveillance records mapped his route from the city centre, through Wabera Street, City Hall Way, Parliament Road, Uhuru Highway, Nyayo Roundabout. He then turned onto Lang’ata Road before diverting onto Magadi Road where he was ambushed.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers – two men on a motorbike – had trailed him for 40 minutes before striking only minutes from his home. The attackers shot him multiple times before fleeing towards Galleria Mall.
“Waaaaaaa, live shooting a few minutes ago, Magadi Road. Motorist shot, the shooter escaped via a waiting boda boda rider,” Peris Wambugu, a bus passenger who witnessed the incident, posted on social media.
Witnesses say the gunman was hooded and walked past vehicles after firing before hopping onto a waiting motorbike. Traffic came to a standstill as panic gripped motorists.
The Star reported Mbobu had at least three gunshot wounds to the chin and died instantly. His vehicle’s window was shattered and his body was slumped in the driver’s seat until police arrived. Several cartridges were recovered and his vehicle was towed to Lang’ata Police Station.
Investigations have ruled out robbery as a motive as nothing was stolen.
Viral Video Raises Questions
The murder has raised questions after a 15 minute video of retired Captain Kungu Muigai surfaced online just hours before Mbobu’s killing.
In the video, Muigai who is a cousin to former President Uhuru Kenyatta claims Mbobu once represented him in a decades long land dispute with a local bank. He alleged corrupt judges were bribed to grab family property and he has witnesses and documents to prove the claims.
“We went to court and I was represented by Professor Kyalo Mbobu who is a renowned lawyer. And when we went to court he categorically stated we want that judgment produced before the court,” Muigai said in the video.
The Senior Counsel Bar (SCB) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) have condemned the killing and asked the DCI to investigate whether the viral video has any link to the murder.
The Judiciary through spokesperson Paul Ndemo has dismissed Muigai’s claims as “ridiculous” and accused him of having a “malicious and camouflaged agenda”.

Public Appeal
As the investigation continues, detectives are reviewing more CCTV footage along Magadi and Lang’ata Roads to trace the assailants escape route.
The DCI has asked for calm and appealed to the public to cooperate, anyone with information should report to the nearest police station.
The legal fraternity has asked for speedy investigation to restore confidence in the justice system that has been shaken by the brazen daylight murder.
