Elgeyo Marakwet MCA Jeremiah Kibiwott Dies After Long Illness

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Endo Ward in Baringo County, Jeremiah Kibiwott Kiptum, has died while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital following a prolonged illness.

Kibiwott, who was widely known as Jeremiah Biwott or Jeremiah Toriebe, had served as the elected MCA for Endo Ward in Marakwet East Sub-County since the 2022 General Election. His death has sent shockwaves through the county’s political leadership and the wider community.

The news was confirmed by Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Speaker Lawi Kibire, who described Kibiwott’s passing as a devastating loss to both the Assembly and the people he represented.

“It is with profound sorrow and deep regret that I wish to inform the public of the passing of Jeremiah Kibiwott Kiptum, the elected Member of County Assembly for Endo Ward in Marakwet East Sub-County,” Speaker Kibire said in a statement.

He praised the late MCA as a dedicated and principled leader who consistently prioritised public participation in his legislative work.

“The late Kibiwott served the Assembly and the people of Endo Ward with dedication, commitment, and a strong sense of duty. He was a leader who always sought the views of his constituents before making key decisions,” Kibire added.

During his tenure, Kibiwott played a significant role in county governance, most notably as Chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture and Irrigation, where he contributed to policies aimed at strengthening food security and improving irrigation systems across the county.

He also served as an active member of several other committees, including Administration, Justice, Public Service and ICT, as well as Tourism, Trade, Cooperatives, Industrialisation, and Wildlife, making him one of the more engaged legislators in the Assembly.

“With the permission of the family here at Nairobi Hospital, I wish to notify the EMC community and the Endo Ward community that Jeremiah Biwott has passed,” Governor Rotich said.

“I wish to convey my sincere condolences to the family, friends, leaders, teachers, the Speaker, his fellow MCAs, the people of Endo, and the entire EMC community,” Rotich added.

Meanwhile, Speaker Kibire announced that the County Assembly would nominate a team to work closely with the family in organising funeral arrangements, with burial details expected to be communicated in due course.
