Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has sharply criticised authorities over the decision to block organisers of the TuKo Kadi concert from accessing Uhuru Park, despite what he claims was full compliance with regulatory requirements.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Dr Matiang’i described the move as “deeply troubling,” warning it could signal a broader pattern of intolerance and state interference in lawful public activities.
“The reported blocking of the TuKo Kadi concert team from accessing Uhuru Park, despite months of compliance with all required approvals, is deeply troubling,” he said.
The former powerful Interior CS argued that the alleged disruption of the youth-led initiative raises serious concerns about the state of Kenya’s democratic space, particularly regarding the treatment of events that have adhered to official processes.

He cautioned that such actions risk undermining constitutionally protected freedoms, including the rights to expression, peaceful assembly, and enterprise.
“This incident reflects a worrying trajectory where legitimate, youth-driven initiatives are frustrated even after meeting all legal and regulatory thresholds,” Matiang’i added, suggesting the move could discourage civic participation and innovation among young people.
The TuKo Kadi concert, which had been billed as a major youth-focused event, had reportedly undergone months of planning and regulatory engagement before organisers were denied access to the venue under unclear circumstances.

Authorities are yet to issue a comprehensive explanation for the decision, even as pressure mounts from sections of civil society and political leaders demanding transparency and accountability.
