JSC Fires Magistrate Orenge Over 2018 Eviction Orders
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has fired former Nakuru Principal Magistrate Isaac Orenge, the man who presided over one of the country’s most high profile hate speech cases involving Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi.
Orenge had acquitted Sudi in 2022 after ruling that the evidence presented was not enough for conviction. He has now been shown the door over a separate matter that has nothing to do with politics.
The JSC confirmed in a letter dated July 30, 2025 that Orenge was found guilty of gross misconduct in the handling of a commercial case, Nilestar Holdings Ltd & Another vs Millennium Plastics (2008) Ltd and three others, which he presided over in 2018.
According to the commission, Orenge issued ex parte eviction orders on February 23, 2018 that led to the demolition of business premises only to later discharge those same orders on jurisdictional grounds. The JSC ruled that the eviction was premature and without confirming whether proper service had been done.
“Upon review, the commission found that a case of gross misconduct had been established and resolved to dismiss Orenge from judicial service,” part of the JSC’s communication to Bryan Khaemba, Kamau and Company Advocates who lodged the complaint.
The commission said the error caused “irreparable harm” to one of the parties in the dispute.
Orenge served in Nakuru between 2020 and 2024, a period marked by high profile cases including Sudi’s hate speech trial that made national headlines. His career is now over after the disciplinary ruling.
