KCSE Scandal Rocks Prestigious Nyambaria High as Alumni Demonstrate at School

Tensions escalated at Nyambaria High School this week as former students returned to the institution to protest what they describe as a “shocking” and unexplained drop in last year’s KCSE results.

The demonstration, which saw students gather outside the school gates, highlights growing concerns among parents and alumni over the school’s declining academic performance, with many placing the blame squarely on the administration.

Parents told FlashNews.co.ke that the principal’s leadership had been marked by “laxity” and a failure to maintain the rigorous academic standards that Nyambaria High has historically upheld. Many expressed deep disappointment, arguing that the results do not reflect the students’ capabilities or the school’s reputation for excellence.

“We worked extremely hard and kept up good grades all year,” said one former candidate. “What we saw in the KCSE results doesn’t match how we performed in class. There must be an explanation.”

Another student echoed these concerns, pointing to a shift in the academic environment in the months leading up to the exams. “Things started changing last year. We didn’t feel the same level of supervision, motivation, or academic pressure that the school was known for,” they explained.

Calls for transparency have grown louder, with some parents urging a joint review involving the school and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to determine whether the discrepancies arose internally or during the grading process.

The situation prompted school authorities to restrict access to the premises. A security guard was reportedly instructed to lock the gates, preventing the protestors from entering the school compound.

Class Representative Benard Onkware Michieka told TUKO.co.ke that internal assessments and mock exams had consistently shown better results than those officially released. “The grades awarded simply don’t align with the classroom performance. Something clearly went wrong,” Michieka said.

The recently-released KCSE 2025 results paint a concerning picture: the school recorded zero As, 21 A-minuses, 99 B-pluses, 285 Bs, and 306 B-minuses, culminating in a mean score of 8.06. For a national school with a legacy of academic excellence, the figures have raised eyebrows among students, parents, and the wider community.

As of publication, Nyambaria High’s administration and the Ministry of Education had not released a formal response. Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over the school as the community demands answers and accountability.
