Kisii Horror: Man Lynched After Allegedly Killing Wife, Feeding Her Remains to Their Children
A terrifying incident has rocked Sugubo village in Nyacheki ward, Nyamache sub-county after residents lynched a man accused of killing his wife, chopping her body and feeding her flesh to his children.
Stephen Onserio, 55, an ex-convict who was released from prison a few weeks ago, allegedly killed his wife Evelyne Nyaboke days before his own violent death at the hands of angry villagers. Authorities have since confirmed the incident and are investigating what they term as one of the most heinous crimes in recent times.
Suspicion Arises After Wife Goes Missing
Trouble started when residents noticed Onserio behaving strangely, often wandering around the village in a dazed state with his two year old child. Neighbors grew concerned when they realized his wife had not been seen for days.
According to Boniface Emmanuel, a concerned villager, suspicion grew when Onserio couldn’t explain his wife’s prolonged absence. “We asked him where his wife was and he said she had gone to her rural home. But it didn’t add up,” he said.
Fearing and unsure, a group of residents followed Onserio to his home. A strong stench hit them at the door and they demanded to be let in. Inside they found a gruesome scene: pieces of cooked and raw meat scattered around the room, later suspected to be human remains.
Chilling Confession and Mob Retaliation
Things came to a head when Onserio allegedly told the villagers that he had killed his wife and had been feeding her to their children. According to Emmanuel, the suspect said he did it days ago and told the children their mother had traveled.
“That man has shocked us so much,” Emmanuel said. “He confessed and said he had been feeding the children their mother’s meat. Some of the meat was cooked and some was raw.”
The crowd was furious and attacked Onserio and dragged him out of his house. He was beaten and burned alive in the nearby area before the police could intervene.
Police Confirm Gruesome Findings
Nyamache Sub-County Police Commander Kipkemoi Kipkulei confirmed that the police were alerted by the area chief but arrived late to stop the lynching.
“When we arrived, we found the suspect was already dead, burned by the mob. We searched the house and found a human skull and a decomposed limb believed to be the wife’s,” Kipkulei said.
The body has been taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem as the investigation continues.
Repeat Offender History Raises Questions
In a chilling twist, Kipkulei also revealed that Onserio was previously imprisoned for allegedly killing his first wife in 2007. He was released less than two years ago and now the question is how can the system monitor violent offenders after release.
“This has left us all shaken. It’s hard to believe someone released so recently could do this again,” Kipkulei added.
Community in Mourning and Fear
Nyacheki community is in shock, trying to come to terms with the magnitude and brutality of the crime. Many are mourning the loss of a mother, traumatized by the way she died and worried about the children who unknowingly ate their mother.
Mental health experts and child protection services are expected to intervene to help the surviving children who are in custody.
Authorities Urge Calm as Investigation Continues
Police have asked for calm and not to take the law in their hands. Investigations are ongoing and we will get to the bottom of this, including psychological evaluation and possible accomplices or system failures that may have contributed to this.
“This is a very bad case, but let the law take its course,” Kipkulei said.
