Details of KMTC Student’s Final Moments Emerge After He Was Allegedly Thrown From Moving Matatu on Thika Road

Fresh details have emerged regarding the tragic final moments of a 19-year-old Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student who died after allegedly being thrown from a moving matatu along Nairobi’s busy Thika Superhighway.
The student, identified as Eugine Mutuku, was reportedly travelling from Thika to Nairobi’s Central Business District on Friday, June 5, when a disagreement over a KSh20 fare allegedly escalated into a fatal incident.
According to preliminary reports, Mutuku was travelling aboard a public service vehicle when the conductor allegedly forced him out of the moving matatu near the Garden City area along Thika Road.
The incident has sparked outrage among Kenyans, with family members demanding justice as police intensify efforts to track down those responsible.
Student Had Just Begun Industrial Attachment
Family members revealed that Mutuku had travelled to Nairobi only days earlier after securing an attachment placement at a health facility located along Thika Road.
His promising future was, however, cut short before he could complete the programme.
Speaking after the tragedy, Mutuku’s elder brother recounted the painful events leading up to the incident.
“I had given him transport money for work that morning. Shortly after leaving for my duties, I received a call from someone who identified himself as Joseph informing me that my brother had been involved in an accident,” he said.
The brother rushed to the hospital, where Mutuku was receiving emergency treatment.
‘The Conductor Threw Me Out’
According to the family, Mutuku was conscious when he arrived at hospital and managed to describe what had happened before his condition deteriorated.
The student reportedly told relatives that he had been thrown out of the moving vehicle by the conductor, contradicting claims that he had refused to pay the required fare.
Family members say the teenager sustained multiple injuries, including cuts on his lips, a fractured leg and serious abdominal injuries.
“He was in severe pain and kept explaining that he had been thrown from the vehicle,” a family member said.
Mutuku was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where doctors fought to save his life. However, he succumbed to his injuries several hours later while undergoing treatment.
Driver and Conductor on the Run
Police have since launched investigations and are pursuing the matatu driver and conductor believed to have been involved in the incident.

Authorities say the suspects allegedly continued with the journey after the student was ejected from the vehicle before later abandoning the matatu in Nairobi’s Kariokor area and disappearing.
Kasarani Sub-County Police Commander Nicolas Rono confirmed that detectives are actively searching for the suspects.
“The suspects have not reported the matter to any police station, and efforts to trace and arrest them are ongoing,” Rono said.
“So far, no arrests have been made, but we are making significant progress and investigations are heading in the right direction.”
The vehicle involved has since been impounded and is being held at Kasarani Police Station as investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The incident has renewed concerns over passenger safety in public transport vehicles, with calls growing louder for tougher action against reckless operators and crew members accused of endangering commuters’ lives.
