KRA to Auction Abandoned Goods at Nairobi Depot After 30-Day Notice
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has given traders 30 days to clear their goods lying uncollected at the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Nairobi or risk losing them to public auction.
In a gazette notice, the tax authority said importers and consignees must take possession of their goods within the next 30 days or risk losing them to a public auction scheduled for November 10 to 14, 2025. The auction will be held online through KRA’s official portal.
“Pursuant to Section 42 of the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA) 2004, notice is given that unless the under-mentioned goods are entered and removed from the custody of the Customs Warehouse Keeper within thirty (30) days of this notice, they shall be disposed of by public auction,” the notice read in part.
KRA also announced that the goods will be open for physical viewing on November 6 and 7, 2025, during normal working hours at the depot in Nairobi.
Among the items up for auction are chocolate boxes, cigarettes, wall panels, molasses, padlocks, lubricants, wines, clothes, thermal machines, spare parts and bed sheets, packed in containers ranging between 20 and 40 feet.
KRA’s Chief Manager at the Inland Container Depot, George Aduwi, said some of the goods have been at the facility since April 2025, beyond the allowed storage period.
Industry players note that goods often stay in depots when importers fail to pay customs duties and taxes or encounter logistical challenges such as transportation delays or limited truck availability.
The authority said the auction is part of the ongoing efforts to decongest storage facilities and comply with customs regulations. Traders have been advised to act fast before the auction deadline.
