Major graft cases set to rock Kenyan courts this week as billions in public funds face scrutiny
Former governors, MCAs and senior officials among those due in court as corruption, unexplained wealth and public asset recovery cases take centre stage
Kenya’s anti-corruption courts are bracing for a busy week, with a series of high-profile cases involving former governors, senior public officials, Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and private individuals scheduled for hearings, rulings, judgments and mentions.
The cases, listed between Monday, July 27 and Friday, July 31, 2026, cover allegations ranging from unexplained wealth and money laundering to procurement irregularities, abuse of office, fraudulent acquisition of public property and the alleged misuse of county and national government funds.
The proceedings form part of wider efforts by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to recover public resources allegedly lost through corruption and irregular transactions.
Catherine Mumma judgment to cap dramatic week
One of the week’s key moments will come on Friday at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, where judgment is expected in a case involving Catherine Mumma, a former joint secretary of the Legal Task Force on the HIV/AIDS Pandemic.
The case concerns an alleged Sh903,000 in irregular allowances reportedly received from the National AIDS Control Council.
The matter has been among the cases pursued by anti-corruption authorities as they seek to recover funds allegedly acquired improperly.
The Friday judgment is expected to bring renewed attention to the question of accountability for public funds and the legal threshold required to prove that money or assets were unlawfully acquired.
Bomet governor case also returns to court
Also on Friday, Bomet Governor Hillary Kipng’eno Barchok and two others are scheduled to appear before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for a mention.
The case involves allegations including conflict of interest, acquisition and use of proceeds of crime and money laundering.
According to the allegations before the court, the matter concerns an alleged Sh2.7 million benefit linked to companies that traded with the Bomet County Government.
The court appearance will determine the next stage of proceedings in a case that places renewed focus on the potential conflict between public office and private commercial interests.
Kidero’s Sh58 million case remains under scrutiny
On Wednesday, the court is expected to issue a ruling in a separate recovery case involving former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and 13 others, concerning approximately Sh58 million allegedly embezzled from the former City Council of Nairobi.
The case has already survived an attempt by the Director of Public Prosecutions to withdraw the related criminal proceedings.
In April, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court rejected the DPP’s application to terminate the criminal case, ordering that proceedings continue. The court found the application premature, while noting that only a fraction of the prosecution’s planned evidence had been heard. Kidero has denied wrongdoing.
The recovery proceedings are separate from the criminal process and concern the alleged loss of public funds.
Sh180 million unexplained wealth case
Wednesday will also see a ruling in a suit seeking recovery of Sh180 million in unexplained wealth involving David Isika Kinyae and others.
The case is part of the EACC’s civil recovery efforts, through which the commission seeks to establish whether assets or wealth were acquired unlawfully and, where successful, have them forfeited to the State.
The same day, the court is expected to hear a recovery case involving Sh800 million allegedly paid through an overvalued tender for the supply of 100 portable medical clinics to the Ministry of Health.
Another Wednesday hearing involves Arnold Karani Njiru and five others, in a matter concerning alleged embezzlement of Sh19.2 million from a purported ghost project under the Laikipia East NG-CDF.
Several other cases will come up for mention, including matters involving alleged fraudulent NYS vouchers worth Sh6.1 billion, recovery of Sh253.3 million, recovery of Sh51.5 million and recovery of Sh15.2 million.
Former Murang’a governor faces Sh351 million case
Thursday will bring another major case involving former Murang’a Governor Francis Mwangi wa Iria and eight others.
They are scheduled to appear for hearing in proceedings concerning an alleged Sh351.1 million media contract awarded by the county government.
The case is expected to attract attention because of the scale of the alleged transaction and the involvement of a former county chief.
Other Thursday proceedings include public land recovery cases involving Meshack Aluvaala and Szumbah Mwanaongoro, concerning parcels in Nakuru valued at approximately Sh40 million each and reportedly reserved for the Ministry of Education.
KWS procurement case also listed
Former Kenya Wildlife Service officers William Waweru Maina and David Kaindi Mutwuiwa will also appear in court over alleged procurement irregularities involving uniforms valued at Sh11.5 million.
Another case concerns Amos Majisu Shidzugane, who is accused of allegedly acquiring public property worth Sh11.5 million through forged academic certificates.
The court will additionally hear a matter involving Gondi Achiro Noberts, trading as Firmline Company, and others over alleged embezzlement of funds belonging to the Kenya School of Law.
Monday and Tuesday cases
On Monday, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court is scheduled to hear a recovery case involving Bob Kephas Otieno and five others, concerning Sh27.8 million allegedly acquired from the Homa Bay County Assembly through imprest payments.
A separate land recovery case involving Margaret Njoki Njuguna is also listed before the Milimani Environment and Land Court.
On Tuesday, Abdi Ibrahim Daar, MCA for Balambala, and four others are scheduled to appear before the Garissa Law Courts over alleged irregular payments amounting to Sh51 million by the Garissa County Government.
The same day, former Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons Benjamin Obuya Njoga and 12 others will appear before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for a mention in a case involving allegations of abuse of office, fraudulent acquisition of public property and money laundering.
The case concerns alleged payments of Sh301.9 million for goods reportedly not supplied to the State Department for Correctional Services.
More than half a billion shillings in another recovery case
Also on Tuesday, Urbanus Wambua and nine others are expected in court in a suit seeking recovery of Sh531.3 million.
At the Makadara Law Courts, Johnson Jackson Githaka and John Faustin Kinyua will face proceedings concerning the alleged illegal acquisition of public property valued at Sh12.1 million.
Other matters scheduled throughout the week include recovery proceedings involving Sh330.5 million, alleged unexplained assets worth Sh342.8 million, recovery of Sh45.1 million and another case involving Sh11.7 million.
Courts become battleground for public money recovery
The packed court diary underscores the growing role of Kenya’s anti-corruption courts in pursuing not only criminal prosecutions but also civil proceedings designed to recover allegedly stolen, fraudulently acquired or unexplained public assets.
The EACC has increasingly relied on asset-recovery proceedings alongside criminal prosecutions, allowing the commission to pursue property and money allegedly obtained through corrupt conduct.
However, the allegations remain matters before the courts. Being charged, named in a recovery suit or appearing in court does not amount to a finding of guilt or liability, and the accused persons are entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence unless a court determines otherwise.
With judgments, rulings and hearings spread across the week, the proceedings are likely to provide a closely watched test of Kenya’s continuing efforts to hold public officials and other individuals accountable over alleged misuse of public resources.
