Matiang’i allies announce Bobasi tour as 2027 political battle heats up
Allies of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i have announced a major grassroots mobilisation tour in Bobasi Constituency, signalling a renewed push to build political networks in the Gusii region ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
The “Team 001 Matiang’i – Bobasi Constituency Tour” is scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2026, at Nyaguku Grounds, with the event expected to begin at 2pm.
The announcement, shared on X on Sunday, August 9, by Borabu parliamentary aspirant Morara Kebaso, comes as political leaders and prospective candidates intensify grassroots engagements across the country less than a year before the next general election.
Leaders line up for Bobasi mobilisation drive
Organisers have described the gathering as a “grassroots activation” bringing together a number of political figures and community leaders from the wider Gusii region.
Those expected at Nyaguku Grounds include Wilkins Omochokoro, Bouse Mairura, Dr Birundu, Komokomo, Olympic, lawyer Cliff Ombeta, Eric Janganya, Enduruche, Adams Mochenwa, Clive Ogwora, Mokaya and Nyamweya.
The organisers also indicated that more leaders could join the mobilisation effort as the tour progresses.
The event is likely to attract attention in the region as political formations begin laying the groundwork for constituency- and ward-level support ahead of the 2027 polls.
Morara Kebaso backs Matiang’i grassroots strategy
The Bobasi tour comes shortly after Kebaso publicly praised Matiang’i’s approach to grassroots mobilisation.
Kebaso argued that large political rallies, while capable of generating publicity, were not sufficient on their own to build a serious presidential campaign.
“Crowds are good for hype and entertainment,” Kebaso said in an X post on July 26, 2026.
He added that anyone seeking the presidency needed to establish strong networks within communities while also presenting a record that voters could assess.
“Anyone who wants to be president must do very serious grassroots mobilisation like Matiang’i and have a track record of excellent performance that the voter can look at,” Kebaso said.
His remarks have added to speculation over Matiang’i’s political ambitions as the former CS continues to attract attention among opposition-minded political actors.
‘Matiang’i will be on the ballot’
Kebaso has gone further in his public support for Matiang’i, arguing that the former Cabinet secretary would not need the approval of political elites to mount a presidential bid.
“Kenyans are looking for a NO NONSENSE president with a performance record,” Kebaso said.
He then declared:
“Therefore, His Excellency Dr Fred Matiang’i will be on the ballot and he will not seek anyone’s permission or approval because the people of Kenya are the ultimate decision makers.”
The comments have intensified discussion around whether Matiang’i could emerge as a major contender in the 2027 presidential race.
For now, however, the Bobasi gathering is being presented primarily as a grassroots mobilisation exercise, with its organisers seeking to strengthen local political networks and bring together leaders ahead of the next electoral cycle.
With political activity already gathering momentum across Kenya, the latest mobilisation in Bobasi could offer an early glimpse of the alliances and grassroots structures that may shape the increasingly competitive road to 2027.
