Emergency Crews Rush to Mike Sonko’s Residence After Fire Breaks Out
Emergency crews were reportedly dispatched to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s residence after a fire broke out at the property in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident triggered a rapid response from Nairobi City County emergency teams after flames and thick smoke were seen rising from part of the residence.
Video footage circulating online appeared to show flames engulfing an outer section of the property, with sparks visible around the affected area.
The footage prompted speculation that an electrical fault may have been involved. However, the exact cause of the fire had not been established, and authorities are expected to conduct an assessment before determining what triggered the blaze.
Nairobi County firefighters, led by Customer Service Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria, reportedly arrived at the scene and managed to contain the fire before it could spread further.
Sonko later took to social media to reassure his followers that he was safe while thanking the emergency responders for their swift intervention.
“The devil is a liar! Just look at how much God loves us. Imagine, He woke us up!” Sonko wrote.
He went on to praise the county emergency team for responding to the incident.
“Mosiria, thank you so much and to your entire team from Nairobi County. May God bless you abundantly,” he said.
Footage shared by the former governor showed several people attempting to battle the flames as the fire illuminated parts of the building in the darkness.
According to Sonko, he and other occupants were awake when the incident occurred, allowing them to raise the alarm and contact emergency services.
The circumstances surrounding the fire remained unclear as of Saturday morning. The full extent of the property damage, as well as whether anyone sustained injuries, had also not been immediately confirmed.
The incident highlights the continuing challenge posed by fire emergencies in Nairobi, where county emergency crews are frequently called upon to respond to incidents involving residential, commercial and industrial properties.
The latest fire also came only hours after another blaze was reported at Ali Glacier, described as one of the largest hardware stores along 3rd Street in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.
The Eastleigh fire reportedly sent a thick column of smoke into the sky as emergency crews moved in to prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
Witnesses also reported hearing sounds resembling explosions from inside the building, although the source of those sounds had not been established.
Authorities are expected to establish the cause of both incidents following further investigations.
