Oburu Oginga: “I’ll Lead ODM to Canaan — But Via Singapore” Amid UDA Coalition Talks

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has addressed the party’s future direction, emphasizing continuity of his late brother Raila Odinga’s vision while embracing ongoing discussions with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking at the Lake Region Community Dialogue in Kisumu on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Oburu used powerful biblical imagery to frame his leadership role and the potential political realignment.

Stepping Into Leadership After Raila Odinga

Oburu acknowledged the immense challenge of succeeding Raila Odinga, describing his brother’s shoes as “very big” that no one can fully fill.

“I can never be Raila Odinga. I cannot copy or replace him,” he said emotionally. “I never sought this position… I never imagined that Raila Odinga would die before me and leave me behind. This pains me the most.”

Despite this, Oburu accepted the responsibility thrust upon him after Raila’s passing, pledging to steer ODM forward with the support of its dedicated grassroots base, known as “Onagi.”

“With your support as Onagi, I believe I can lead ODM successfully. I am therefore asking for your full support,” he appealed.

Biblical Analogy: From Moses to Joshua, Canaan Via Singapore

Drawing a parallel to the Bible, Oburu likened his role to Joshua succeeding Moses in leading the Israelites to the Promised Land (Canaan).

“Like Joshua who remained after Moses, I will take you to Canaan, but through Singapore,” he declared.

Here, “Canaan” represents Raila Odinga’s long-held dream of a prosperous, equitable Kenya, while “Singapore” nods to President William Ruto’s ambition of transforming Kenya into a first-world economy modeled on Singapore’s success.

Oburu noted that this path aligns with Raila’s ultimate vision, even if the route involves a strategic detour through coalition with the current government.

“Raila had said he might not reach that destination with us, and unfortunately, that came to pass,” he reflected.

ODM Already Collaborating in Broad-Based Government

Oburu highlighted that ODM is not starting from scratch in working with UDA, as the parties already cooperate under the broad-based government framework established earlier.

He pointed to the government’s ten-point agenda, with key priorities on improving education and healthcare, as areas where ODM can contribute meaningfully.

“ODM was already working with UDA within the broad-based government framework,” he stated.

Time for Clear Direction: Opposition or Coalition?

As party leader, Oburu called for an end to ambiguity about ODM’s political stance.

“Despite this, some people still want ODM to remain in opposition. Now that I am party leader, we must decide clearly where we are headed,” he remarked.

He urged the party to negotiate from strength, leveraging its influence and numbers.

“Let it be clear that ODM is not asleep or silent. We must negotiate from a position of strength as ODM. We must also vote with strength and with numbers,” Oburu emphasized.

Call for Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections

Oburu concluded by stressing the need for internal unity as ODM navigates coalition discussions with UDA and shapes its role in Kenya’s evolving political landscape leading up to the 2027 general elections.

The remarks signal a pragmatic approach to opposition politics, balancing loyalty to Raila’s legacy with strategic engagement in government to advance shared national goals.
