Oburu Rebukes Kahiga’s Remarks on Raila’s Death as Childish

Oburu Odinga – the big brother of the late Orange Democratic Movement leader,Raila Odinga – has finally spoken out about the recent remarks of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over Raila’s passing . And let me tell you what he thinks of them : they are “childish” and “not very becoming” of a leader.

Appearing in a TV interview on a Sunday in November 2 2025, Oburu was clearly taken aback by Kahiga’s comments and to be honest was expecting a lot more maturity from the governor – especially given his age and the position he holds.

“ I thought the man looked like a mature person because of his age, but to be honest I think those kinds of thoughts are pretty childish ,dont you ? “As a leader you would think he would not be fixated on who’s passed away. Whether you were friends or not , politics changes – you could be a rival one day and a ally the next.”

Oburu urged leaders to think carefully about what they say , especially when talking about loss and national mourning. And not just think about it but actually exercise some self control .

“What if one day he was your boss ? how would you feel about what he said ? To me some of the comments from some leaders , well I just shake my head and think they’re childish and i just let it go – they are just narrow-minded and if you let it get to you your heart might stop working a lot sooner than its due !”

Kaghia’s remarks at the burial ceremony in Nyeri on October 21 2025, that somehow Raila’s death was part of some divine intervention letting the Mt Kenya region get back in with state resources – drew a lot of anger from leaders across the board, with people labelling them completely insensitive and divisive, coming at a time when the country is still in mourning.

Oburu’ s response adds to the bunch of leaders calling out for some restraint and empathy from the politicians out there , especially when talking about the death of a big name. And he keeps hammering home that moments of national grief is the time when we come together , not tear the country apart.
