Peter Kaluma Begs Babu Owino to Ditch Sifuna Camp and Be Johnson Sakaja’s Running Mate in 2027

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has called on his Embakasi East counterpart, Babu Owino, to rethink his political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a tweet on Monday, February 16, Kaluma urged Babu to leave Senator Edwin Sifuna’s camp and return to the ODM fold, led by party stalwart Oburu Oginga.

Kaluma Warns Babu Against Opposing Gachagua’s Camp

Kaluma cautioned that Babu’s current alignment with the opposition could hurt his chances of winning the Nairobi gubernatorial seat. He explained that switching away from ODM in hopes of gaining support from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s backers would likely backfire.

According to the Homa Bay legislator, Gachagua’s supporters are expected to rally behind Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, with a running mate from the Wiper Party.

“Babu Owino, return to the ODM party. Gachagua and your Agikuyu in-laws, for whom you are leaving ODM, will never vote for you to be the Governor of Nairobi. Your Agikuyu in-laws will vote for Gakuya to be Nairobi Governor in 2027, with a running mate from the Akamba community,” Kaluma tweeted.

Should Babu Become Sakaja’s Running Mate?

Kaluma also suggested a path that could secure Babu political victory while keeping long-term ambitions alive. He advised that Babu should serve as Governor Johnson Sakaja’s running mate in 2027, giving him time to prepare for a gubernatorial bid in 2032.

“Please return home to ODM and be the running mate of Sakaja in 2027. This way, you will win and get time to rebuild your bid for Nairobi Governor in 2032. Alternatively, seek re-election as MP of Embakasi East in 2027, as you bid time for your gubernatorial bid in 2032,” Kaluma said.

Gachagua Signals Potential Support for Babu and Sifuna

Meanwhile, Gachagua has hinted at backing both Babu and Sifuna in 2027. On Wednesday, December 3, he claimed that President William Ruto might attempt to push them out of ODM.

Gachagua welcomed them to his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) should they be expelled, noting that the Nairobi Senator has performed well in office. He also stated he wouldn’t object to giving Sifuna the ODM ticket to defend his seat.

“The ODM party secretary general has performed well as the Nairobi Senator, and I have no problem giving him the ODM Party ticket to defend his seat,” Gachagua said.

He further encouraged Babu to consider joining DCP or former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party if they felt uncomfortable in their current settings.

“DCP is a party for patriots, but ODM members can join if they leave their party,” Gachagua added.
