Ruto Speaks Out After Allegations of Backing Sudan’s RSF Rebels

Kenyan President William Ruto has rejected allegations that his government supports Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), saying Nairobi remains neutral in the country’s worsening conflict.

In an interview aired on Sunday, Ruto said the claims of Kenya backing the RSF or engaging in arms smuggling were “false and politically motivated.”

“Kenya is a great democracy in the region,” Ruto said. “The meeting that was there was one of civil society, church groups, women, and leaders having a conversation about their country.”

His remarks came after Sudan’s government accused Kenya of harbouring rebel elements and allowing RSF meetings in Nairobi. Ruto denied the allegations, saying Kenya welcomes all peace-promoting groups and remains committed to dialogue.

“That is absolutely false,” he said. “People are meeting in Nairobi whom I sometimes do not even know if they are meeting.”

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua earlier criticized Ruto for allegedly allowing the RSF, which faces global sanctions for atrocities in Sudan, to hold meetings in government facilities in Nairobi.

“President Ruto has messed this country in the national eye,” Gachagua said during a February interview. “We cannot allow rebels sanctioned for genocide to meet in government facilities.”

Ruto reaffirmed that Kenya’s foreign policy remains one of non-interference and dialogue, emphasizing that both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF share responsibility for Sudan’s turmoil.

“Both SAF and RSF are cut from the same cloth,” he said. “They have no solution to Sudan’s crisis because both believe in military means to settle the situation.”
