Beryl Achieng’s Death Confirms Why She Missed Raila Odinga’s Burial
A month after the death and burial of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India, the Odinga family has been struck by a second tragedy following the passing of his sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday by their sister, Ruth Odinga, who paid tribute to Beryl in a heartfelt statement describing her as a woman who “died in Christ” and whose absence will be deeply felt within the family.
Announcing the loss, Ruth said:
“It is with a heavy heart, but accepting the will of God, we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga. Daughter of the late Hon. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga. Mother to Ami Auma, Chizi and Taurai.
“While we are deeply saddened by her demise and the immense void left in our lives, we take solace in the belief that she is safe in the Lord’s arms. We are thankful for the invaluable gift of the time we were privileged to share with her and for the profound impact she had on all who knew her.”
Why Beryl Achieng Missed Raila Odinga’s Burial
Beryl’s absence during Raila Odinga’s widely watched burial had sparked questions at the time, as neither she nor her daughters were present. Her youngest son, Taurai, was instead tasked with reading her tribute during the ceremony.
The matter was clarified during the funeral by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, the eldest sibling, who revealed that Beryl was unwell and undergoing medical care abroad—even as the family was mourning Raila.
Introducing Taurai to deliver his mother’s eulogy, Oburu explained:
“Achieng is not able to come because she is a bit indisposed. She is bringing her eldest son, Taurel.”
Family sources now confirm that Beryl had continued receiving treatment overseas in the weeks following Raila’s burial, but her condition deteriorated, leading to her death.
Her passing marks another heavy blow to the prominent Odinga family, already grappling with the loss of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
