John Methu Makes Bold 2027 Prediction After Ol Kalou By-Election as He Claims Ruto ‘Spent Ksh1.3 Billion’
The outcome of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election has ignited fresh political debate, with Nyandarua Senator John Methu claiming the result exposes mounting challenges for President William Ruto as the country edges closer to the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with a local television station on Sunday, July 19, Methu argued that the Kenya Kwanza administration suffered a major political setback despite what he alleged was an unprecedented deployment of state resources during the campaign.
His remarks followed Thursday’s by-election victory by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau, whose win has quickly become a focal point of national political discussion.
Without providing evidence for the claim, Methu alleged that President Ruto had spent approximately Ksh1.3 billion in a bid to secure victory for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate.
“I hear Ruto has spent Ksh1.3 billion. There is a friend of mine who is a friend of Ruto, and he told me that they started speaking about Ol Kalou, and he was slapped. A very senior person was slapped because Ruto cannot believe he gave people Sh1.3 billion, and he got 5,000 votes,” Methu claimed.
The senator argued that the Ol Kalou result reflects changing political sentiments among voters and suggested it could offer an early glimpse into the contest expected during the 2027 presidential race.
According to Methu, the government may not be able to replicate what he described as the extensive mobilisation witnessed during the by-election across the entire country during a general election.
“We are taking William Ruto home; the signs are there. Even this 5,000, you cannot attribute it to Ruto. In 2027, he cannot concentrate that kind of number of goons in one constituency. He cannot get that kind of policemen to be everywhere. The people will overwhelm these goons, and people will protect their votes,” he said.
Methu further maintained that the opposition’s overriding objective is to remove President Ruto from office rather than focus on individual political ambitions.
“I never think about what I will be in 2027; what is on my mind is how William Ruto will go home. If you have a good Parliament and a bad president, this bad president will influence the good Parliament. For us to try and fix this nation, we have to remove William Ruto,” he added.
The senator’s comments come as leaders from both the ruling coalition and the opposition continue to draw political lessons from the Ol Kalou by-election, widely viewed as one of the first significant electoral tests ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The by-election attracted intense national attention, with both sides investing heavily in campaigns and portraying the contest as a key measure of public support. While opposition leaders have celebrated the DCP victory as evidence of growing momentum against the government, leaders allied to President Ruto have downplayed the result, insisting that a single constituency contest cannot be used to predict the outcome of a nationwide election.
Methu’s allegations regarding campaign expenditure and other claims have not been independently verified, and the Presidency has not publicly responded to the specific assertions.
