Kalonzo reveals how Raila survived assassination attempt under Ruto’s regime

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday claimed that opposition leader Raila Odinga survived an assassination attempt in 2023 after his armoured vehicle absorbed ten bullets.

Speaking at Opoda Farm during a visit to Raila’s grave, Kalonzo said the incident occurred at the height of anti-government protests over the rising cost of living.

“When Kenyans were saying the cost of living was unbearable, we nearly got killed,” Kalonzo said. “Raila and I escaped from Embakasi South to Karen. It was like the orders that day were to kill us.”

He added that Odinga’s armoured car was struck multiple times but shielded him from harm. “We counted 10 bullet attempts on my brother,” he said. “If it were not for the armoured vehicle, we would have buried him in 2023.”

Kalonzo said the experience strengthened his resolve to continue opposing what he called bad governance.

He also defended the Odinga family against those who have insulted them. “This is not a witch lying here,” he said, referring to the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. “Nobody should ever use such names to describe the Oginga family again.”

The remarks have renewed attention to the turbulent 2023 protests, when opposition leaders accused President William Ruto’s administration of mismanaging the economy and called for reforms.
