Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Faces Third Impeachment Bid Amid Corruption Allegations

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is once again under threat of removal from office after an impeachment motion was tabled before the County Assembly on Monday.

The motion, brought forward by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accuses Governor Nyaribo of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and irregular appointments. Matwere claimed the governor had violated the Constitution and other laws.

“I wish to give notice of motion for the removal of Honourable Nyaribo, the governor of Nyamira County, from office by way of impeachment on the following grounds: number one, gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya and other laws, and two, abuse of office,” Matwere said.

This marks the third impeachment attempt against Governor Nyaribo in as many years, highlighting deep divisions within the County Assembly. In September last year, the governor narrowly survived an impeachment vote, with 22 MCAs supporting his removal, 12 opposing, and none abstaining.

A similar attempt in September 2023 also failed after 16 MCAs voted for removal, falling short of the two-thirds majority required under the law.

Governor Nyaribo’s political challenges come amid an ongoing Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigation into allegations of large-scale corruption and abuse of office. Last month, EACC officers raided the governor’s homes and offices over an alleged Ksh382 million irregular tender.

The October 29 operation extended beyond Nyamira, targeting officials in Kisii and Nairobi counties suspected of involvement in the scandal. According to the EACC, the simultaneous searches aimed to recover evidence and question senior county officials named as persons of interest.

The County Assembly Speaker adjourned the House on Monday and scheduled the next sitting for Tuesday, November 18, at 9:30 am, when MCAs are expected to formally debate the impeachment motion.

Political analysts say the repeated attempts to remove Nyaribo reflect ongoing tension within the county’s leadership and underscore the challenges of governance amid corruption probes.
