Nyeri MCAs Reject Move to Oust Governor Mutahi Kahiga Over Raila Remarks

Members of the Nyeri County Assembly have dealt a blow to growing calls for the impeachment of Governor Mutahi Kahiga, dismissing the demands as plainly politically motivated and a recipe for stirring up more division in the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, October 30, MCAs were adamant that there was no plan to launch an impeachment motion against the beleaguered Governor which m following a series of comments about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Chinga MCA Kiruga Thuku told the press that the Assembly was focused on delivering for the people of Nyeri, not on getting bogged down in political games. ” Quite frankly I havent heard of any plans to bring a motion like that because it would be just a waste of our time and resources unless its a serious constitutional issue that needs to be looked at such as misappropriation of funds”, Thuku said.

He pointed out that impeachment processes usually just serve to deepen divisions rather than sort them out. “All he did was make a silly comment about Raila Odinga – and even that wasnt worth getting worked up about because he apologised anyway”, he added.

Their statement comes on the back of a petition filed at the High Court in Nairobi on Wednesday, October 29, that’s looking to have Governor Kahiga declared unfit to hold office .The petitioners say the governor made inflammatory comments which threatened the country’s unity and think the court should suspend him from office until the case is settled.

Its worth noting that Governor Kahiga got a real grilling after he appeared to make light of Odinga’s passing in a speech, describing it as a “blessing in disguise” for the Mt Kenya region. He was saying in Kikuyu that the former Prime Minister’s death would see government resources shift northwards, claiming that Odinga’s so-called ‘handshake’ with President William Ruto had given a lot of weight to the Nyanza region.

Despite the backlash Kahiga later said sorry and claimed that his remarks had been taken out of context. Now the county leadership is saying that the administration is as united as ever and remains focused on delivering services to the good people of Nyeri.
