Students Injured After School Bus Carrying Music Festival Participants Overturns in Bomet
Six students have been injured after a school bus carrying learners travelling from Nairobi for an annual music festival overturned along the Bomet-Kaplong Highway.
Panic erupted in Bomet County on Sunday evening, August 3, after a school bus carrying students to a music festival overturned, leaving at least six learners injured.
The incident occurred along the Bomet-Kaplong Highway as the students were travelling from Nairobi to participate in the annual music festival.
Images obtained from the scene showed the bus lying on its side after the crash, with reports indicating that the vehicle may have lost control before overturning.
The circumstances leading to the accident, however, remained unclear, with no other vehicle reportedly involved in the crash.
Students forced to use emergency exit
The situation became particularly tense after the bus doors were blocked following the impact.
The students were reportedly forced to evacuate through the emergency exit, with bystanders rushing to the scene to help them out of the overturned vehicle.
Six students sustained injuries and were attended to by responders before being taken to Kaplong Mission Hospital for further treatment.
According to updates from the scene, all the injured students were in stable condition.
The exact cause of the crash had not been established at the time of publication. Police and other relevant authorities are expected to investigate the incident and determine what caused the bus to overturn.
Fresh concerns over school transport safety
The Bomet-Kaplong Highway has previously witnessed a number of serious road crashes, raising concerns over road safety along the busy corridor.
In May, casualties were reported along the highway at Meja-Chepkosa following an accident involving a double-cabin pickup and a motorcycle.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by students travelling long distances for school activities, particularly during periods when large numbers of learners are on the roads.
The Bomet crash comes amid a series of road accidents involving students and school transport reported in different parts of Kenya in recent days.
On Thursday, July 30, three students were among six people killed in a crash involving a private van, a trailer and a 14-seater matatu at Lessos Junction in the Mlima Punda area along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
Several other passengers were injured in the collision and were rushed to Burnt Forest Hospital and Plateau Hospital as police and emergency responders arrived at the scene.
Days earlier, on July 28, at least 13 students were injured after two school buses carrying a combined 101 pupils were involved in an accident in the Riting area of West Pokot County.
The string of incidents has renewed questions about the safety of school transport and the need for heightened vigilance whenever students travel on Kenya’s increasingly busy highways.
For the students involved in Sunday’s Bomet crash, however, the immediate focus remained on their recovery after a journey to a music festival suddenly turned into a frightening road emergency.
