DCI Arrests Suspected KDF Impostor Armed With Loaded Pistol During Tense Football Match in Migori

A man suspected of impersonating a member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has been arrested after he was allegedly found carrying a loaded firearm during a high-profile football match at Sony Green Stadium in Awendo, Migori County.
The dramatic incident unfolded on Sunday, June 7, as fans packed the stadium to watch a crucial National Super League (NSL) clash between Migori Youth FC and Equity Bank FC — a match that ultimately secured Migori Youth’s historic promotion to the FKF Premier League.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect drew the attention of security personnel after he allegedly attempted to force his way into the VIP dais reserved for dignitaries and invited guests.
In a statement released after the incident, the DCI said officers stationed at the venue swiftly intervened when the suspect’s behaviour raised concerns.
“Law enforcement officers in Migori have arrested a man found in illegal possession of a CZ pistol during a football showdown between Migori Youth FC and Equity Bank FC at Sony Green Stadium in Awendo,” the DCI stated.
Detectives said the situation escalated when security officers attempted to stop the man from accessing the restricted section. The suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm, prompting an immediate response from police officers deployed at the stadium.
Witnesses watched in shock as officers quickly moved in, disarmed the suspect and restored order before the confrontation could escalate into a potentially dangerous security breach.
A subsequent search reportedly led to the recovery of a CZ pistol loaded with ten rounds of ammunition.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect was allegedly masquerading as a serving KDF officer despite having no authority to do so.
The probe took another twist after detectives established that the firearm belonged to a licensed civilian firearm holder. Authorities said the owner later admitted to handing over the weapon to the suspect, an action that contravenes firearm regulations.
The licensed firearm holder was subsequently arrested and is expected to face charges related to allowing an unauthorised person access to a firearm.
Both suspects remain in police custody as investigators continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns at public gatherings, particularly sporting events that attract large crowds and senior government officials.
Despite the security scare, the football match proceeded and ended in celebration for the home side. Migori Youth FC secured a memorable 2-1 victory over Equity Bank FC, finishing at the top of the National Super League standings.
The victory earned the Migori-based club automatic promotion to the FKF Premier League, where they will compete next season against established Kenyan football giants including Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards and Kenya Police FC.
